We’re in the thick of high school fall sports. Our hairdos match. Our closets are intermingled. And being apart from eachother for one day makes us feel lost and out of sink.
There is something about a high school team that creates bonds that are unique from any other.
But, at this point, lets face it, the team might be facing some mid-season stress. So I’ve compiled some mid-season team-bonding adventures to nip budding tension in the bud:
Get Psyched About a Hike
Fall is a beautiful season and a perfect time of year for hiking! It’s a true adventure and a great way to de-stress from high school pressure. It’s also a way to burn off all those cookies you ate at the pasta dinner.
A delicious alternative to froyo or ice cream, smoothies are easy to make and healthy and fun. Assign everyone a fruit or ingredient to bring, borrow a couple blenders, and you have yourself a smoothie bar!
Take on the town
An awesome off day adventure for the team is spending the day in the city! Its a great change of scenery, and there is always so much to do there. Aquariums, art museums, outdoor events, and off-beat restaurants all are super engaging, and are cool ways to find other common interests besides your sport. It’s also fun to hang out with the team in normal clothes without sweating!
A classic, but prized team-bonding adventure. Make some popcorn, rent some movies, and hangout! A cool spin on the sleepover is a campout; a tent-in-the-backyard-scary-stories-and-flashlights kind of a deal.
Team Give Back Day
Bond while being generous! One of our major events is our team cancer walk. We take the bus early into the city and walk five miles for the cure for cancer. It rocks to support a cause as a team; it unites us all for a good cause. Other ideas include toy drives, working in a soup kitchen, helping out at a retirement home or day care, or running a clinic for your sport to give back to the kids in the community. It might sound corny but its awesome to feel good about what you’re doing as a group.
I hope these ideas are inspiring and help to revive and bolster team bonds, between your squad, and between JV and Varsity. It’s important to create positive bonds between each squad. High school sports aren’t worth doing unless it brings you joy. And the team is a major influence on how joyful the experience can be. By creating close bonds with your teammates, relationships are created that are unbreakable. Though its just high school sports, its way more than just a sport.
