Girls basketball: Arlington finishes strong, advances to face Ursuline

By

The No. 5 Arlington High School girls basketball team dominated the second half Friday to defeat No. 12 Mahopac 73-53 in a Section 1 Class AA first-round game in Freedom Plains.

The Admirals, who earned No. 2 seeds the last two seasons only to suffer upset losses at home, will visit No. 4 Ursuline in the quarterfinals next week.

“(Ursuline is) always scrappy and they’re well-coached,” Arlington coach Kim Costello said. “We’ll have to go into their gym. It’s not going to be easy.”

Arlington led Mahopac by a point at halftime, then outscored the visitors 38-19 in the second half, including a 20-7 final quarter.

“Our defense tightened up,” Costello said. “We were finding the open player and we were knocking down shots. … We had 23 assists as a team, and that’s when we play our best basketball.”

Senior point guard Jackie Rywalt had 12 of those assists to go with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Classmate Gabi Esposito led the team with 21 points and eight rebounds. Seniors Sarah Kaminsky added 11 points and Jocelyn Strack scored 10.
