Girls' Basketball: Earlham earns first state berth since 1981 six-on-six squad

Earlham girls’ basketball coach Kristin Sheffield got a glimpse of history Monday.

Sheffield led her team to the state tournament for the first time since the school’s 1981 six-on-six squad.

Morgan Johnson scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures in a 79-55 win over Twin Cedars of Bussey in a Class 1-A regional final at Truro.

Angie (Arnburg) Ridgely, a freshman guard on the 1981 squad who is now a kindergarten teacher in Earlham, approached the first-year coach after the game.

“She told me it’s hard to believe it’s been 32 years since the last state tournament,” Sheffield said.

Kristen Weber scored 17 points for Earlham (16-9), which will play Central Lyon of Rock Rapids (23-2) at 3:15 p.m. next Monday in a state quarterfinal. Sisters Abbey and Hannah Murphy combined to score 25 and Addie Herman had 12.

Earlham has won nine of its last 10 games. The 79 points was a season high.

“We knew we had a lot of good athletes,” said Sheffield, who previously coached lower-level basketball. “We try to push the tempo of ballgames.”

Alee Hugen led Twin Cedars with 24 points.

In other games:

* Pella Christian defeated Woodward-Granger in a 2-A final 65-36 at Pleasantville.

* Panorama of Panora advanced to state with a 52-40 win over Manson-Northwest Webster.
