A day away from their next challenge, the Blazers have reason to feel happy.
The second-seeded Millbrook High School girls basketball team will enter the Section 9 Class C semifinals with a replenished lineup and a boost from Monday’s 50-37 sectional quarterfinal win over visiting S.S. Seward, seeded seventh.
“I think we’re starting to peak at the right time. I feel confident,” said head coach Heather Iannucci, whose Blazers (10-7) host Wednesday’s sectional semifinal against either No. 3 Tuxedo or No. 6 Fallsburg; those teams played in a quarterfinal that ended after press time.
“If we value the ball and play good defense, I think we have a shot,” Iannucci said.
Rosario Sosa (13 points) and Marissa Williams (10 points) led the Blazers in Monday’s game, in which Millbrook turned a 12-8 lead after the first quarter into a 25-17 halftime cushion.
“I thought our defense was definitely the key to the game tonight. We had 12 steals in the first half,” said Iannucci, who was happy to see a pair of Blazers return from injury. “We had a little separation at halftime, and we came out aggressive.”
