For the second time this week, the undefeated Two Rivers girls basketball team received a bit of a scare.
But for the second time in a week, the Raiders came out on top.
After escaping New Holstein with a 42-40 overtime win on Tuesday, a fourth-quarter surge lifted Two Rivers to a 48-39 win over Sheboygan Falls in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference tilt on Friday night.
The visiting Falcons (1-5, 0-3 EWC) jumped out to a three-point lead after the opening quarter. It was an advantage they wouldn’t surrender until midway through the fourth quarter.
With 4:15 left in the game, Kenzie Walesh scored to give the Raiders (5-0, 3-0 EWC) a 38-37 lead. Two Rivers went on to score 10 of the game’s final 12 points to seal the win.
“I thought we battled back,” Two Rivers head coach Mike Schultz said. Our girls really picked up the pressure defensively. Offensively, we started attacking the basket a little bit, and we made some free-throws (at) the end.”
Walesh collected a game-high 21 points and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field.
Though his team trailed for the bulk of the contest, Schultz never saw his players lose faith in themselves.
“They have some confidence now…and I think they trust each other to do the right things,” Schultz said. “They never do give up. They are a great bunch of girls.”
Schultz brushed off jokes about his blood pressure in light of recent games.
“As a coach, those are the games you like. You get to stay in it,” Schultz said. “You get to see how much you can affect the game as opposed to just putting girls out there and playing.”
“But yeah, I would appreciate just being able to sit down and watch for a little bit,” he added with a chuckle.
With the win, Two Rivers snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Falcons, which dates back to Jan. 29, 2009.
Though the Raiders are currently the eight-ranked team in Division 3 according to WisSports.net, Schultz is not letting his team look ahead.
“We tell the girls, ‘one game at a time.’ We’re 1-0 tonight,” Schultz said. “We’re 0-0 next week.”
