Girls hoops roundup: Late 3-pointer lifts Lansing Catholic

By

A three-pointer by senior Annie Fata with just under 10 seconds remaining gave Lansing Catholic a 48-47 victory over Williamston on Friday.

The shot came on a broken play that ended in a thrilling win for Lansing Catholic.

“I just got it and threw it up,” Fata said. “When it went in, I didn’t know what to do.”

Although the Cougars picked up just their fifth win of the season, they had been playing better, and the victory felt like a long time coming.

“We have been up and down, but we’re starting to get a little more consistency towards the end here,” said Lansing Catholic coach Joe Springer.

A shot from long range by senior Laura Rosekrans brought Williamston to within one point with 42 seconds remaining. Two free throws from sophomore Sarah Schultz, who led all scorers with 21 points, gave the team the lead before Fata’s shot.

Fata said some early practice might have helped her game-winner go through the net.

“We shot before this game a lot because we didn’t have school,” Fata said. “I think that helped a lot.”

The Cougars got off to a hot start and never let up in the first half. They had the gym on upset alert with a 26-23 halftime lead.

The early success was partially because of the trouble that Williamston had defending sophomore Maria Repichowski, who had 10 points at the break and finished with 13 points for the game.

With a big win under its belt, Lansing Catholic could be a spoiler in the postseason.

“We plan on getting better before that and getting ready for that tournament,” Springer said.
