Girls' roundup: Homer holds off Union City



Behind a balanced scoring effort, Homer held off visiting Union City, 37-31, in Big Eight Conference girls’ basketball action on Tuesday.

Bailey Manis had a team-high 13 points, while Alexis Mestdagh had 11 points and Stephanie Osborn had 10.

Union City (3-12, 2-9) was led by Brooke Johnson with 15 points, six assists and six rebounds. Katie Birch added 10 points for the Chargers.


Mendon 54, (at) St. Philip 14: Scarlett Shirley and Natalie Gallagher had five points apiece in the loss for St. Philip (7-7). Mendon, ranked No. 8 in Class D, improves to 14-1 overall.

Loy Norrix 42, (at) B.C. Central 37: Kayla Freeman notched a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds and also came up with seven steals in the Bearcats’ SMAC East home loss. Also for BCC (4-10, 2-8), Ka-Leah Ryan had seven points and seven steals, and Kaylee Ryan had seven points.

(At) Mattawan 53, Lakeview 38: Danyelle Jones had 13 points and seven rebounds in the Spartans’ loss, with both teams now owning 8-7 overall records. Also for Lakeview, Brittney Kimball had seven points, six rebounds and two assists Casey Looper had five points and seven rebounds; and Madison Olsen had three points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Marshall 55, (at) Parma Western 14: Tierra Orban produced 16 points and four rebounds as the Redhawks cruised to the non-league win. Also for Marshall (12-3), Sarah Huffman had 13 points and five assists.

Athens 50, (at) Quincy 18: Class D honorable mention Athens was led by Leia Fuller with 12 points and eight rebounds. Also for the Indians (13-2, 10-1 Big Eight), Allison Fuller had 12 points, Chantel Davenport had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists and Audrey Oswalt had nine points and five steals. Quincy (2-12, 1-10) was led by Bailey Knaack and Jordan Kotwicki with four points apiece, while Kelsey Bean pulled down five rebounds.

(At) K-Central 60, Climax-Scotts 28: The visiting Panthers — honorable mention in Class D — were stopped by the Class A Maroon Giants (8-7) in this non-league game. Stephanie Cochran had nine points for C-S (11-4), while Destiny Froberg had seven points and four rebounds.

(At) Delton Kellogg 52, Constantine 31: Mallory Sewell had 18 points and three assists as the host Panthers improved to 12-3 overall and 10-3 in the KVA. Also, Brooke Martin scored 10 points and Christy Gonzalez snared eight rebounds.

K-Hackett 54, (at) Maple Valley 49: Timara Burd had 13 points and Alivia Johncock and Olivia Ricketts scored eight apiece as the host Lions dropped this KVA tilt.

Sturgis 42, (at) Bronson 32: Skyler Sobeski had six points and eight rebounds in the loss for Bronson. Also for the Vikings, Kelsey Scheenks had four points and three assists.

(At) G-A 36, K-Christian 33: Noelle Mejeur and Kathryn Dooley notched 11 points each as the Rams (10-5 overall) downed Kalamazoo Christian (5-10) in KVA competition.

Calhoun Christian 43, (at) Battle Creek Academy 32: Kelsey Snowball had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the win for Calhoun Christian (8-4). Also for the Cougars (8-4), Kristina Craft had nine points and Claire Tribbett had five points and five assists. Battle Creek Academy’s Shaly Torres had nine.
