Oostburg’s girls soccer team kept its steady pace through the regular season on Monday after edging Cedar Grove-Belgium 2-1 in overtime.
The Rockets powered to a quick start after scoring a goal inside the opening six minutes. But the Flying Dutchmen’s defense clamped down to hold Cedar Grove scoreless the rest of the way, and Krystle van Deursen leveled the scoreboard late in the second half to force overtime.
Maranda Huibregtse scored Oostburg’s winning goal after a shot by freshman Cheyenne Thein bounced off the crossbar.
“Cedar Grove played a very good game,” Oostburg coach Ryan Ohlfs said in a statement. His team improves to 17-1-2 and 10-1-1 in the Central Lakeshore Conference. “We were lucky enough tonight to get things going at the right time and used the few opportunities we had.”
Ohlfs credited the Dutchmen’s goalkeeper Jocelyn Stemper with helping preserve the win.
“She made some tough physical saves,” he said.
