Alyssa Harvey didn’t score a goal Tuesday night. She didn’t even pick up an assist or take a shot.
But statistics will never measure the importance of the role the Stevens Point Area Senior High defender played in the Panthers securing a 3-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference win over Marshfield at Goerke Field.
Harvey spent all 80 minutes serving as a shadow for Tigers’ scoring machine Darian Molter, who found time and space nearly impossible to come by most of the match.
“Molter is probably the most dangerous single player in the conference, so we went man-to-man on her and I thought Okie (Harvey) did an outstanding job to stayed with her and basically took the angle of the shot away from her,” SPASH coach Don Peel said.
“Was she the man of the match? Yes she was.”
All Molter needed was a couple inches and she got that opening late in the opening half.
She buried a shot from the top of the box to tie the game at 1-1 after Alicia Sobczak staked the Panthers to an early lead.
SPASH has some people who can put the ball in the back of the net too, including Jen Hoerter, who broke free and scored just 4 minutes, 15 seconds into the second half.
Autumn Shurbert-Hetzel would add an insurance goal for the Panthers 20 minutes later to cap off the scoring.
“With it 1-1 at the half, we had a lot of confidence,” Tigers coach Steve Lindner said. “They have a very quick team and it’s tough to match up with them speed for speed.
“Jen is a great player and all she needs is that little bit of room.”
