North Hunterdon 3, Watchung Hills 2: The North Hunterdon High School girls soccer team finally got a break, as the Lions capitalized on an own goal with just under 15 minutes left in regulation Tuesday to snap a 2-2 tie and held on for their first victory, 3-2 over Watchung Hills.
Amanda Marques put the Warriors on the board early in the first half, before Alex Haris and Noura Gallas struck for the Lions (1-9), giving North its first halftime lead of the season. Ana Hagel scored to tie it early in the second period for Watchung Hills (3-7-1).
“It was much needed,” said first-year North Hunterdon coach Matt Maurella, who earned his first varsity win. “We were due for one, and today was the day. We’re putting the pieces together and starting to come together as a team. I think we just came out more relaxed today, and it showed. After all the hard work the girls have put in to the season, it’s nice to finally come out with a win.”
Bridgewater-Raritan 2, Pingry 1: Sophomore Leah Posella finished a Lauren Hall pass with 4:56 left in regulation and third-ranked Bridgewater-Raritan edged top-ranked Pingry. Abigail Ousoulijoglou opened the scoring in the 16th minute for the Panthers (5-3-4) with Hall picking up the assist. Tanika Roach tied it with 10 seconds left in the first half with Rachel Noone notching the assist for the Big Blue (7-2), who had beaten B-R in double overtime on Sep. 10.
Montgomery 4, Hunterdon Central 1: Senior Colby Ciarrocca posted a hat trick and added an assist as Montgomery avenged its opening-day loss to Central in decisive fashion. Jessi Goldman also scored for the Cougars, who improve to 6-2-2. Christine Tack scored the game’s first goal, six minutes in, to give Hunterdon Central (9-2) a short-lived lead.
Hillsborough 0, Ridge 0: Kat Albanese made 17 saves for Hillsborough (5-5-2), while Sam Carney stopped 20 shots for Ridge (8-3-1).
Scotch Plains-Fanwood 1, Westfield 1: Katie Harper scored in the first half for Scotch Plains-Fanwood (10-0-1), while Sara McCutcheon tied it in the second half for Westfield (8-3-1).
Sayreville 2, North Brunswick 1 (OT): Emma Denby finished a Morgan Guenther cross eight minutes into overtime to send Sayreville past North Brunswick. The game was scoreless until the 60th minute when Kim Stratton put the Bombers on the board off a Guenther feed. The Raiders knotted it 10 minutes later on a goal from Tasha Cuesta.
Bridge 2, South Brunswick 1 (OT): Christina Shannon scored on a breakaway 1:04 into overtime to lift Old Bridge (9-1). After a scoreless first half, Alexis Suarez got things going for the Knights, finishing a Tara Durstewitz pass 7:45 into the second period. South Brunswick (6-5) tied it 21 minutes later on a goal by Samantha Stojanovski from 25 yards out.
Mount St. Mary 1, Delaware Valley 0: Aimee Manley scored off a Catherine Haeberle pass 25 minutes into the game and it proved plenty as Mount St. Mary improved to 9-4-1.
Edison 2, Colonia 1: Cassie Leight scored on a first-half penalty kick and Felicia Forsyth netted the game-winner during the second half for Edison (8-2-1). Jazlyn Moya-Santos hit in the first period for Colonia (6-6).
Metuchen 5, J.F. Kennedy 0: Emily Corson scored two goals, and Katharine Chura, Ariana Santo Pietro and Allie Chalker added goals to lead Metuchen. Emily Buchanan made three stops for the shutout, as the Bulldogs improve to 12-0. Clare Lewis made 21 saves for the Mustangs (3-11).
Gill St. Bernard’s 3, North Plainfield 0: Andrea Jablonskyj scored two goals and Gabriella Gomes added another to send Gill St. Bernard’s (6-4-2). Maria Alcivar made eight saves for the Canucks (5-5-1).
Somerset Tech 3, Bound Brook 1: Harleen Singh posted two goals and an assist, and Ariel Conner added a goal to send Somerset Tech (9-5). Cecilia Rojas hit in the first half for Bound Brook (0-11).
Timothy Christian 4, Cardinal McCarrick 1: Sabrina Solorzano netted a hat trick and Megan Collier added a goal to power Timothy Christian (8-3-1). Madison McNally hit for Cardinal McCarrick (6-3).
Governor Livingston 1, New Providence 0: Lindsay DiStaso scored a goal and Olivia Emmanuel made 15 saves to earn the shutout and Governor Livingston improved to 9-3. Katie Vigliante made seven saves and Jen Maluso stopped eight for New Providence (4-7).
6, Benedictine 1: Keyanna Bagley posted two goals and an assist, and Gina Watkins added two goals as Plainfield rolled. Aylin Linares chipped in three assists for the Cardinals (4-7).
South Plainfield 2, Rutgers Prep 1: Caity Hughes and Nicole Gerardi scored first -half goals, and Sydni Suroweic finished with seven saves as South Plainfield improved to 5-6. Bree Livingston scored for Rutgers Prep (3-5-1).
J.P. Stevens 1, Monroe 0: Melaney Zranchev scored off a Hannah Harkay pass and J.P. Stevens held on. Erin Shea made 11 saves for the Hawks (4-5), while Erin Seppi stopped 10 shots for the Falcons (5-5-1).
Manville 1, South Hunterdon 1: Nataly Brito scored a first-half goal for Manville, before Lauren Wendeborn tied it with 11:52 left in the second half for South Hunterdon. Amber Lathi made five saves for the host Mustangs (3-7-1), while Megan Donnelly stopped three shots for the Eagles (1-7-1).
2, Voorhees 1: Madison Gavornik scored a goal and Hanna Panreck made four saves, but two first-half goals sunk Voorhees (2-9-1).
Oak Knoll 5, Immaculata 2: Kate Mulkerin posted a goal and an assist and Ava Simon added a goal for Immaculata (2-9-1).
Bishop Ahr 6, Perth Amboy 0: Alexa Povelaitis scored two goals for Bishop Ahr (9-1). Alexandra Laguna made five saves for Perth Amboy (1-9-1).
