Girls' state track | Adriana Brown eclipses discus record

By

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.

Adriana Brown doesn’t have to look far for inspiration in the throwing events. The Lawrence Central junior’s father, Kevin, was an All-American thrower for Indiana State University and regularly finds ways to motivate Brown to find that extra inch on every throw.

“My dad says every time I (set a personal best), I always have more behind it,” Brown said. “He’s never shocked. He pats me on the back and says let’s get after it some more; set a new goal and let’s go for it and have fun.”

Saturday, Brown found more than anyone in the state ever has in the discus. Her state-winning heave of 168 feet, 6 inches in the girls’ track and field state finals at Indiana University shattered Stacy Martin’s 14-year record of 165-4. Lawrence Central finished second in the team scoring to Fort Wayne Northrop, 60-51.

“It was kind of in the back of my mind a little bit,” Brown said of the record. “My sophomore year, when I first started, I threw 128 and ended with 144. This year, I said I was going to keep getting after it and really work. My main goal was either this year or next year to go after that state record. That’s what I tried to do today and my goal came true.”

Brown wasn’t done. She went on to place fourth in the shot put after not qualifying for the event last year.

Her record throw in the discus was nearly 30 feet farther than her third-place throw last year.

As a potential future All-American like her father, she’s already drawn the interest of several colleges.

“She is super-motivated and wants to throw all the time,” said Lawrence Central coach Tim Richey. “It doesn’t matter the month. It’s ‘Hey, can we throw?’ She’s obviously a big target for colleges. My email and phone ring off the wall each day.”

The state title was Northrop’s state-record 10th. No other team has more than four. Northrop finished as the runner-up last year to Pike.

“It’s a little frustrating to get second,” Richey said. “… Today, we just fell a little short to an outstanding team.”
