Girls tennis: Central Wisconsin players claim sectional titles

No. 1 singles player Grace Larrain and the No. 1 doubles pair of Toni Rufledt and Carly Maves won a WIAA sectional titles and helped the Newman Catholic girls tennis team advanced to the WIAA state team tournament for the first time in school history Thursday.

Newman posted 53 points to win the sectional team title ahead of runner-up Kohler (39) at the WIAA Division 2 Kohler Sectional.

Also Thursday, No. 1 singles player Gabi Kitchell of D.C. Everest and No. 1 doubles players Caroline Krolicki and Mallory Wanserski of Wausau East won titles at the WIAA Division 1 Eau Claire Memorial Sectional.

Stevens Point Area Senior High, which advanced players in all seven flights to the sectional tournament, placed second with 36 points, behind host Eau Claire Memorial (51 points) at the Division 1 sectional.

The state individual tournaments are Oct. 17-19. The state team tournaments are Oct. 25-26. All will be at the Neilsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Newman has been a part of the WIAA since 2000, after the dissolution of the Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association.

Kitchell, a junior, avenged her only two losses this season by beating Emily Leutschwager of Stevens Point Area Senior High in the WIAA Division 1 sectional final at Eau Claire Memorial. Kitchell was a state quarterfinalist last season.

East’s Krolicki and Wanserski will also compete in the Division 1 state tournament. They also were state quarterfinalists last season.

Other Division 1 state qualifiers from central Wisconsin were SPASH’s Leutschwager, a freshman, and SPASH doubles players Jaide Barber and Juliet Champion.

Larrain, a senior, beat Tallie Piaskowski of Manitowoc Roncalli in the WIAA Division 2 sectional final at Kohler. Larrain was a state semifinalist as a junior in 2012, and she reached the state final as a sophomore in 2011.

Newman’s Rufledt and Maves will also compete in the Division 2 tournament.

Other Division 2 state qualifiers from central Wisconsin were doubles players Molly Wirtz and Nicole Schroeder of Pacelli, and Lauren LaPree and Madison Luetmer of Newman.
