John Jay High School’s girls tennis team won its second straight match to begin the season, topping Mahopac 7-0 on Wednesday in Wiccopee.
All three of the Patriots’ singles matches and all four doubles matches were decided in straight sets. Singles winners were Josephine Tai, Pia Krishnamurti and Ananya Parlapalli. Victorious doubles teams were Meghan O’Keefe and Likitha Kumar, Ashna Gupta and Sarah Wang, Joelle Grady and Tiffany Livoti, and Kelly Patel and Ishita Agarwal.
John Jay coach Will Davis said the team struggled in its first match, a 4-3 win over Yorktown on Sept. 9.
“I wondered how we would bounce back off of that,” Davis said. “They played really well today. Hopefully, the confidence carries into our next match.”
John Jay visits Somers today at 4:15 p.m.
John Jay has one senior, O’Keefe, two juniors, and the rest of the lineup is all underclassmen. The team, Davis said, has nine matches over the next 14 days.
“So far, it’s been good. The girls all get along,” Davis said. “A few of the younger kids had issues with nerves early on. Once they got settled in and got comfortable, they started playing better.”
