John Jay High School swept Arlington 7-0 in girls tennis on Monday in Freedom Plains as John Jay’s Josephine Tai bested Arlington’s Maranda Sears at first singles 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.
Tai improved her individual record to 4-2 and handed Sears her first defeat of the season.
“Josie really struggled in the first set and had a lot of unforced errors and a lot of double faults,” John Jay coach Will Davis said. “She showed a lot of heart fighting back in the second set.”
The Patriots (7-1) have won their first three league matches. Pia Krishnamurti and Ananya Parlapalli each won singles matches in straight sets.
Victorious doubles winners were Meghan O’Keefe and Likitha Kumar, Ashna Gupta and Sarah Wong, Joelle Grady and Tiffany Livati, and Kelly Patel and Ishita Agarwal.
“We put a lot of zeros up there and we did a great job,” Davis said. “The team is very close and has a lot of fun together. When Josie was finishing, there were 14 girls on the side of the cage watching. It’s kind of nice when everybody’s pulling for you. Everybody’s involved and everybody gets excited when somebody wins.”
