It’s not often in girls tennis that you get to replay a match you lost earlier in the season. Arlington High School freshman Maranda Sears got that opportunity on Thursday.
Sears defeated John Jay junior Josephine Tai 6-0, 6-0 at Cross Court Tennis Center in Wappingers Falls to capture her first Section 1 Conference 1 title. Tai defeated Sears during the regular season.
“We kind of focused on that,” Arlington coach Gail Lynch said. “This is your match that you get back. You don’t always get a match back.”
Lynch said when she arrived at Cross Court, Sears was already running and warming up.
“She’s probably the strongest girl I’ve had in a long time, especially for a freshman,” Lynch said. “Obviously the Tai sisters (Josephine and her older sister Dorothy) have been the people to talk about for the last few years, but Maranda kind of said, ‘Hey, Arlington’s here and we’re back on the grid.’ “
John Jay’s Pia Krishnamurti defeated North Salem’s Lindsey Baum by injury forfeit for third place. All four singles players will compete in the Section 1 tournament, which begins at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Harrison High School. The Roy C. Ketcham doubles team of Tina Jing and Ruchi Patel will also compete after a fourth-place finish.
