Godby-Rickards showdown to be streamed on web

Thursday’s football showdown between rivals Godby and Rickards will be played before a national audience — on the Internet.

The District 2-5A game at Cox Stadium will be broadcast by the NFHS Network, a joint venture between the National Federation of High Schools and Play On! Sports.

Play On! Sports is an Atlanta-based company that generates live and on-demand coverage of prep sports across multi-platforms.

Joy Becker, Godby High’s athletic director, said she was informed by the Florida High School Athletic Association on Tuesday that the game was selected by the NFHS Network as its national game of the week.

The video stream will be free to viewers. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Godby, a member of PlayOn! Sports Network since last spring, has video streamed its football games this season.

The defending state champion Cougars can capture the district title and secure home field advantage in the playoffs with a victory over the undefeated Raiders.

Last season, Godby won five consecutive road games in the playoffs, punctuated by a 21-20 victory over Immokalee, for the state crown in the Orlando Citrus Bowl.

Becker said that both schools will pre-sell tickets ($6) to Thursday’s game starting today at each school.
