Riverdale’s red-hot bats went cold Monday night in a non-district showdown of Midstate high school softball powerhouses.

Goodpasture defeated Riverdale 5-1 Monday night at Lady Warrior Field, handing the Lady Warriors their second loss of the season. Mimi Cartwright no-hit Riverdale, allowing eight runners on base — six due to walk, one hit batter and one on a fielder’s choice.

“She pitched a great game,” said Riverdale coach Christy Bingham of Cartwright. “A game like this allows them to face steady, good pitching. Although, we’ve faced quite a lot of good pitchers. She’s a good pitcher.

“It just happens. Sometimes your kids come to swing the bats, and every now and then they don’t.”

The loss snapped a Riverdale eight-game win streak. Riverdale (21-2) must rebound quickly. The Lady Warriors play at 6:30 p.m. today at Smyrna High in a rematch of the 2012 District 7-AAA tournament championship game.

“The main thing is we just didn’t hit,” said Riverdale pitcher Kristin Uselton. “It felt like something was kind of missing. I think it was kind of our lack of energy. Coach thinks it was we’ve had so many games played already, and we had a long road trip (last week) to Disney.”

Riverdale scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Josie Messick led off with a walk and advanced to second on an error. Two outs later, Sarah Higgins and Caylee Porter walked to load the bases. Messick scored on a wild pitch to trim Goodpasture’s lead to 4-1. But Riverdale couldn’t extend the inning as Cartwright threw an off-speed pitch to strike out Paige Byram.

“All it takes is that one hit for us, and we’re gone,” Uselton said. “That’s all it takes. When one person gets a hit, usually the next three hitters get a hit.”

Goodpasture (9-1) added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Cariona Hassell hit her second double of the game and scored on Tamara Hensley’s single.

Goodpasture jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second when Meg Morrow walked and Madelyn Dycus reached on Byram’s throwing error. Destiny Brewington brought in Morrow when she reached on a fielder’s choice. Morgan Warren then singled in Dycus.

Cartwright singled and scored on Hassell’s double in the fifth to make it 3-0. Brewington singled and scored on Kaylin Littlejohn’s single in the top of the sixth to make it 4-0.
