A week after coming up two victories short of a Section 4 Dual Meet Tournament title, the Greene wrestling team turns its attention to this weekend’s Midstate Athletic Conference Championships, which begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Unadilla Valley.
The Trojans are looking to defend their team title and win their third title in five years. Last year, Greene ended Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton’s two-year title reign, winning comfortably over the runner-up Bears, 176½-138.
Last weekend, Greene lost to runner-up Union-Endicott in the semifinals, 45-35, at the Section 4 Dual Meet Tournament.
Two of last year’s MAC individual champions are back to vie for repeat titles for Greene — Brendan Wheeler and Ryan Castle. Mike Beckwith and Christian Dietrich, who both missed last year’s league tournaments due to injury, are among several other Greene wrestlers favored to win titles.
B-G/A, which had won five MAC titles in a six-year span before Greene won last year’s title, has a pair of returning champions in Justin Cirigliano (132) and Mark Viviano (195).
Unatego, which placed a solid third last season, could be a darkhorse contender for the team title. The Spartans have a pair of returning champions in Kevin Thayer and Codie Nichols and also feature Austin Ryan and Ryan Marszal as individual title threats.
