Tommy Vetrano drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning and Jordan Urban made a diving catch in left field to snag the final out in the John Jay High School baseball team’s 5-4 road victory over John F. Kennedy Catholic on Saturday in Somers.
Matt Lisella, who struck out two in the bottom of the eighth, earned the win in relief of starter Tyler Kardas. Lisella pitched three innings without allowing an earned run. Kardas struck out seven in five-plus innings and was responsible for four runs, including three that scored after he was removed in the sixth.
The Patriots fell behind 1-0 after the first inning, but posted four runs in the top of the fifth. Urban ripped a bases-loaded, two-out double to give the Patriots the lead, and Blake Keenan followed by driving a 2-2 fastball into left-center field for a single to plate two more.
“That’s what you have to do against good teams. You have to tack on,” John Jay coach Tom O’Hare said. “I was really impressed with Blake Keenan’s job at the plate. He’s just continued to improve every game.
“There were some guys in the lineup that haven’t been everyday guys. We got some great production today.”
John Jay and Kennedy will face each other again on Monday in Wiccopee.
