Cody Greene capped Essex’s 70-yard, last-minute drive with a 17-yard touchdown catch with no time left on the clock to help vault the Hornets to a thrilling 35-34 win over Rutland in Division I high school football action on Friday night.
Joey Robertson (34 carries, 181 yards) threw the winning TD pass and Zach Falls added the decisive extra point for Essex (3-2), which won its third straight game. After a 21-21 halftime tie, the teams were knotted again at 28-28 in the fourth quarter before the dramatic final three minutes.
Quarterback Nick Boles’ 70-yard bomb to Joe Couture (four touchdowns) had given Rutland (2-2) a 34-28 lead with just 1:14 to play. But the Hornets responded by marching down the field in 1:07 for the win.
Boles finished 11-of-18 for 280 yards and four TDs for the Raiders. Wyatt Socinski ran the ball 26 times for 191 yards and a score.
* Rice 35, North Country 0: Chris Jansen rushed for three scores and passed for another to drive Rice to a rout of North Country in D-II.
Jansen’s 59-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter gave the Green Knights (3-2) a 14-0 halftime lead. Joey Hester caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jansen and Anthony Phillip added another score on a 10-yard screen pass.
North Country drops to (0-5).
* Milton 35, Winooski 7: Chris McClellan rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns on five carries and Milton ran past host Winooski.
Cooper Bushee had a 58-yard touchdown run, Brad Bombard scampered 11 yards for a score and Zack Bundy went 52-yards to the end zone for the Yellowjackets (3-2).
Winooski opened the second half with a recovered onside kick and went down the field to close the score to 21-7, but Milton responded with two unanswered touchdowns to end the game.
Kyle Bigelow ran 3 yards for Winooski’s touchdown. Andrew Decarreau combined for over 200 yards rushing and passing for the Spartans (0-5).
* Fair Haven 50, Poultney 22: Back-to-back onside kicks and touchdowns to start the game propelled Fair Haven to a rout of Poultney in a nonleague rivalry showdown.
Tyler Rice piled up 169 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and quarterback Ryan Alexander threw for three scores and ran for another to power the Slaters (4-1), who led 36-8 at halftime.
Vincent Kendall led the Blue Devils (2-3) with 160 yards and a TD on 13 carries.
* U-32 36, BFA-Fairfax 21: Colby Brochu ran for 194 yards and two touchdowns as U-32 used a 20-point fourth quarter to grab a win over visiting BFA-Fairfax.
Adam Gowans also rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown, while Matt Greene hit Matt Smith with a 44-yard touchdown pass for the Raiders (4-1). Smith also rushed for a TD.
The Bullets fall to 3-2.
