John Jay High School’s girls basketball team defeated Poughkeepsie 53-29 on Thursday. Patriots coach Larry Brooks said he still sees plenty of room for improvement.
“I think we had a little bit of a hangover from the loss the other night,” Brooks said of Tuesday’s 54-43 defeat against Our Lady of Lourdes that ended the Patriots’ eight-game winning streak. “We came out slow and Poughkeepsie jumped out to a 6-0 lead. That’s what killed us the other night and it’s something we need to get better at in our league because we have teams who are capable of putting you away in the first few minutes.”
John Jay outscored Poughkeepsie 30-7 the rest of the first half.
On Thursday, Rachel Long led John Jay (9-1 overall, 2-1 league) with 11 points, while Calli Balfour chipped in with 10.
E’lantra Means led Poughkeepsie (3-7, 0-3) with a game-high 17 points.
John Jay visits Beacon Monday at 5:45 p.m.
“We practice for 90 minutes or two hours a night and we try to get better in that time,” Brooks said. “We’re not coming to the gym for the status quo.”
