Franklin D. Roosevelt High School’s softball team completed a successful trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., winning the annual Grand Strand Tournament with a 5-3, come-from-behind win over South Doyle (Tenn.) in the title game on Wednesday.
Roosevelt snapped a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning as Jessica Demczar singled home Maddy Lee, who led off the inning with a triple. Cassie Czentnar singled home Demczar for an insurance run. Roosevelt pitcher Allison Pritchard allowed one hit and struck out nine over seven innings, walking three and hitting one batter.
Roosevelt also came from behind in the other two games it played on the trip, topping West (Tenn.) 10-5 on Monday and beating University (W.Va.) 8-7 on Tuesday.
“It was great that they showed they can come from behind,” Roosevelt coach Pat Moshier said. “Now, the next step is if they can take a lead and keep it.”
Moshier said the team’s trip to Myrtle Beach could be important in starting the season right.
“It’s great for team-building, which is the biggest thing,” Moshier said. “I’ve always felt we have a leg up on other teams because we have a good booster club and administration, and a board of education that sees the value in this trip. Without them, we wouldn’t be doing this stuff.”
