Senior Day could not have gone better for Our Lady of Lourdes High School softball player Taylor Sartori.
Sartori’s Warriors defeated Poughkeepsie 5-4 on Tuesday at MacGhee Road Field. The senior’s walk-off, bases-loaded single to left field scored Rebecca Sparks to complete Lourdes’ regular season at 16-1.
“It was perfect,” Sartori said. “It just hit the bat perfect and I went with it.”
Sartori’s RBI hit capped a seventh-inning rally for the Warriors (16-1), who entered the frame trailing 4-3. After Jen Zazzarino flew out to start the inning, Emily D’Antonio, Sparks and Michaela Casey had consecutive singles, with Casey’s RBI tying the score at 4-4. After Poughkeepsie pitcher Tori Davies intentionally walked Chloe Weeks, Sartori came to the plate with the game on her bat.
“That was a roller coaster of a game,” Lourdes coach Trevor Purcell said. “We were fortunate enough to be the home team, bat in the bottom of the inning, and put together a couple of hits.”
Lourdes took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Casey (3 for 4, three RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Zazzarino. Poughkeepsie took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning as Valerie Joern singled home Kyzhea Singleton, who had tripled. Kiara Pittman then tripled home Joern. Singleton and Joern each had two hits.
Back-to-back RBI singles by Sparks and Casey in the fifth gave Lourdes the lead back at 3-2. Poughkeepsie again responded in the seventh as Kiamani Thomas singled home Singleton, and Abby Weeks singled home Joern. Thomas was thrown out at home attempting to give the Pioneers an insurance run and had a big collision with Lourdes catcher Chloe Weeks.
Lourdes pitcher Meghan Meyers struck out nine, walked two and hit two batters. Davies had five strikeouts and four walks.
The Poughkeepsie Pioneers (15-5) are confident heading into the Section 1 Class A tournament. Seeds will be announced today.
“I’m looking at a home sectional game and I don’t think that’s ever happened before,” Poughkeepsie coach Eilis Petrosino said. “Poughkeepsie is a team to be reckoned with. We held with (Lourdes) to the end. We should be able to handle anybody and I’m really hoping we can.”
