THE WINNER: Jill Shimabuku
School: ’Iolani School (Honolulu, Hawaii)
Athletic achievement:She led the Raiders to a 14-1-1 record and the Division I state title this past season. Shimabuku scored eight goals and passed for 22 assists, including a pair of goals in a 3-1 win over Punahou School (Honolulu, Hawaii) in the state title game. Shimabuku tallied five goals and three assists in three postseason games and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Division I state tournament. She concluded her prep soccer career with 23 goals.
Academic excellence: Shimabuku has maintained a 3.43 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally as a peer tutor, with the Special Olympics, at the Honolulu Marathon and as a youth soccer coach.
“Jill calmly handles the ball and controls the flow of the game for ‘Iolani,” said Greg Van Cantfort, the athletic director at Kalani (Honolulu, Hawaii). “I was impressed by her pinpoint accuracy in passing in tight situations and her leadership on the field. She is the complete package.”
THE FUTURE: Shimabuku will play for the University of Puget Sound in Washington.
