ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.- Wilson has a lot to build off of from last season. Bill Atlas’s squad ended 2012 with a 6-3 overall record and was just one game away from reaching the sectional championship. But Coach Atlas still has some players to get ready if Wilson wants to reach the playoffs again.

“We had a pretty good season last year, we finished up making it up to the sectional semis but we also graduated about 15 seniors so we’ve got some big shoes to fill. We’ve got a couple linemen back, my quarterback is back so we’re expecting big things,” Bill Atlas told Two on Your Side’s Stu Boyar at the Lions Ad-Pro All Star Game.

Even with the number of seniors lost from 2012, Coach Atlas still has some familiar faces coming back. “We graduated a lot of our outside guys but we’ve got four linemen back, Sam Oswald is our center who’s a good, tough kid and we’ve got a couple other guys who are back that we’re really excited for,” Coach Atlas explained.

Wilson returns four starters on offense from 2012 and three on defense. But just because the offense has one more returning starter, Coach Atlas doesn’t see one side of the football having an edge over the other. “With our numbers I think it’s about even. I think we’ll be alright, we’ve got some returning guys on defense and some on offense so I think we’ll be alright,” said Coach Atlas.

Just because Wilson remains in the same league as last year, that doesn’t mean its schedule hasn’t shaken up. “Things have changed a little bit, we’ve got Lackawanna down now, we’ve got Tonawanda down now which is exciting. Change is always good and always interesting maybe a little scary but we’ll see,” Coach Atlas pointed out.

There’s always that one rivalry game on the schedule that every team gets excited for. And Wilson certainly has its eye on one team. “It’s always Newfane; Newfane’s always our biggest so we always circle that one. With them also being in our division this year it’s going to be a divisional game so it should be exciting that night,” Coach Atlas said.

Wilson opens up the 2013 season on the road against Akron on September 6th at 7pm.
