High School Basketball Roundup: Captain Shreve holds off Southwood


Captain Shreve traveled to Southwood and came away with a key 65-54 District 1-5A win over the host Cowboys Wednesday night in boys basketball.

The Gators (11-13 overall, 2-0 district) used a big first-half advantage taking a 36-12 lead into the break. Jesse McWright and Derrick Pace led Shreve in scoring with 17 points each. Chris Black hit four 3-point goals on his way to leading Southwood (10-9, 1-1) in scoring with 12 points and Deterrius Hubbard hit three 3s on his way to 11 points.

Airline 75, Parkway 67

At Airline, the Vikings got 53 points from Hayden Hildebrand and Andrew Latson in posting the District 1-5A win over the Panthers. Hildebrand scored 27 and Latson 26 as Airline improved to 5-12 overall and 1-1 in district. Parkway (5-11, 0-2) was led in scoring by Brodrick Jefferson’s 25 points, and Brandon Harris added 14.

Huntington 70, Minden 59

At Huntington, the Raiders placed five players in double digits to get the District 1-4A win over the Tide. Branden Sheppard led the way for Huntington (16-3, 3-0) with 14 points, Jeremy Jones and Chance Chambers both had 12, Aldon Kelly posted 11 and Johnny Woodard was next with 10. C.J. Elkins led all scorers for Minden (19-4, 1-1) with 19 points, Kevin Hamilton had 11 and Anfernee Red 10.

Mansfield 45, BTW 41

At Mansfield, the Wolverines remained at the top of District 1-2A with the win against the Lions. Mansfield improved to 3-0 in district and 15-7 overall as Verlan Hunter scored 17 points and Brandon Campbell contributed 14. BTW (10-9, 0-3) was led by Karim El-Amin’s 14 points.

Evangel 74, North Caddo 68

At Evangel, the Eagles stayed on the heels of Mansfield with the District 1-2A win aginst the Rebels. Tim Stokes’ 20 points led Evangel (10-11, 2-1), Benny Pineset scored 18 and Calvin Daniels 16. Four players were in double figures for North Caddo (14-9, 1-2) with Jontavion Brooks leading the way with 16 points, Alton Clay fired in 12, Isaiah Patterson 11 and Josh Carroll 10.

Girls Southwood 66, Captain Shreve 18

At Southwood, the Lady Cowboys rolled out to a 37-11 first-half advantage in posting the easy District 1-5A win. Kourtney Pennywell’s 14 points led Southwood (20-1, 2-0), Jessy Ellis and Keona Favis both scored 11 and Chelsea Tieuel 10.

Parkway 50, Airline 44

At Airline, the Lady Panthers rallied from a 29-21 halftime deficit to post the District 1-5A win. Georgia signee Halle Washington returned to action after being out most of the season with an injury and scored 12 points along with Mikeala Kirkendoll. Nikki Bryant was the high scorer for Airline (8-13, 0-2) with 16 points and Jasmyn Carswell was next with 10.

Huntington 71, Minden 44

At Huntington, the Lady Raiders got 58 points from Caitlin Jenkins, Khadijah West and Kierra Sims to improve their District 1-4A mark to 2-0. Jenkins posted 23, West 18 and Sims 17 for Huntington (11-9 overall). Carmella Specks led all scorers with 26 points for Minden (12-10, 0-2).

Fair Park 65, Northwood 33

At Fair Park, the Lady Indians kept their District 1-4A record perfect at 3-0 with the victory. Savanya Robinson scored 15 to lead Fair Park (14-6), Ty’ronica Foster added 12, Savannah Thomas 11 and Dominique Johnson 10. Northwood was paced by Denisha Henix’ 10 points.

Bossier 62, Plain Dealing 56

At Plain Dealing, the Lady Kats overcame the 46 points and 13 rebounds of the Lions’ Denisha Chambers to get the win. Bossier (10-11) got 15 points and 17 rebounds from Khobi McDaniel, Deniera McGlothan scored 13 and Tiffany Lynn 12.

Green Oaks 46, Richwood 44

At Monroe, the Lady Giants’ Princess Davis poured in 25 points and Troynecia Wilson added 10 in the win on the road.
