OPELIKA – The G.W. Carver boys basketball team’s lengthy winning streak — and likely its hold on the No. 1 spot in the Class 6A rankings, too — is over.
The Wolverines had a 38-game winning streak snapped Saturday with a 57-54 loss at Opelika.
Jeremy Johnson scored 22 points and Demetrius Houston had 13 for Carver (15-1), which had two chances to either tie or win in the final seconds.
TJ Presley scored 15 points and Shontrez Tolbert had 12 for Opelika (13-7). Jakell Mitchell and Kenneth Keith added 11 each.
Carver’s last loss was 70-58 at Sidney Lanier on Dec. 9, 2011. The Wolverines finished last season with 23 straight wins and their first state championship since 1984.
The Wolverines, who beat Jeff Davis by only three, 65-62, on Friday, have been ranked No. 1 in Class 6A all season. No. 2 Lee-Huntsville (24-2) has not lost to an in-state team this year.
Saturday wasn’t the first time the Wolverines tasted bitter defeat at the hands of Opelika recently. Opelika beat Carver 35-21 in the Class 6A football semifinals Nov. 30.
Carver plays at Central-Hayneville on Tuesday.

BIRMINGHAM – Marquis Coleman had 18 points to lead the Poets (9-8) over the Vikings (10-12). D’Arion Anderson scored 12, while Steven Wallace and Vernon Bell added 10 each. Lanier hosts Robert E. Lee on Tuesday.

BIRMINGHAM – Khalil Carter had 20 points and Lorenzo Moore 13 for the Rams (14-5) in an MLK Classic hosted by Huffman. Darreyll Purnell’s 22 points led Center Point (18-4). Brew Tech, which is ranked second in Class 4A, plays at Alabama Christian on Tuesday.

PRATTVILLE – Davonte Wells scored 26 points and Xavier Robinson pitched in 12 for the Eagles (13-4), who play at Maplesville on Monday.
Jake Newcomb led the Panthers with 16 points, while Reggie Jackson had 11 points and 10 rebounds. PCA (16-8) travels to Reeltown on Tuesday.

TUSKEGEE – Quindravius Gibbs notched 33 points for BTW. K’Jamus Sanders added 10 points. The Golden Eagles (5-9) hosts Valley on Tuesday.
Everett Harris led Tallassee with 27 points. Don Speake had 14 points. The Tigers (14-7) host LAMP on Tuesday.
STRAUGHN – Robert McGirt poured in 40 points to lead Daleville (20-1). The Warhawks hosts Slocomb on Tuesday. Hobie Hughes led Straughn (13-5) with 18 points.

CLAYTON – Michael Dallas had 21 points and Zach Hulcher 10 rebounds for Catholic (11-12, 2-3 3A, Area 4). Emanuel Thompson Jr.’s 19 points and Travon Patterson’s 18 led the Jags (13-6, 4-1). Catholic plays at Stanhope Elmore on Tuesday.

Kendra Fowler had 11 points for Carver (15-2). Keyuana Thompson and Taja-wana Russell each scored nine points. The Wolverines visit Central-Hayneville on Tuesday.

PRATTVILLE – Kristen Emerson tallied 29 points for PCA (23-0). Alex McLain added 15 points. The Panthers visit Reeltown on Tuesday.
