The challenger: Oro Valley Canyon del Oro. Coach Dusty Peace has been waiting for this team for two years with a strong senior class.
The dark horse: Maricopa. Must replace key skill players from playoff team, but the cupboard isn’t bare.
The intrigue: Maricopa lost its top passer and rusher but should still have enough speedy athletes to make up for those losses. Sophomore Isaiah Pedro has been running with the first team for Maricopa, which graduated quite a bit of experience. … Jeff Scurran returns as a high school football coach for the first time since leading Tucson Santa Rita to the state final for a second year in a row in 2009. His overall high school coaching record is 255-79-2. He led Santa Rita to an 11-2 record in 2007 in his first year there after the school had gone winless the previous season. … Canyon del Oro has 22 underclassemen on a team that won four games last season.
