Iowa City Regina (1-0) at Solon (1-0): It’s been nearly four years since Iowa City Regina suffered its last defeat. It’s been nearly three since the Regals, ranked No. 1 in 1-A, snapped Solon’s 42-game win streak in 2010. The Spartans, ranked sixth in 3-A, would like to end Regina’s run at 43.
Aplington-Parkersburg (1-0) at Union of LaPorte City (1-0): Aplington-Parkersburg, ranked fourth in 1-A, opened the season with a 51-13 rout against North Tama. The Falcons will have to contend with Iowa recruit Jay Scheel, who ran for four touchdowns in Union’s opener against Center Point-Urbana.
Players to watch
Jared Myers, QB, Colfax-Mingo: Myers completed 20-of-25 passing for a 383 yards and four touchdowns in Colfax-Mingo’s 63-47 victory against Saydel. His yardage total is the highest single-game passing figure in the state this season.
Jack Kline, RB, BGM of Brooklyn: Kline scored touchdowns on seven of his 10 touches in BGM’s 77-22 win last week against East Marshall. He returned three punts for touchdowns, ran for three touchdowns and caught a 58-yard pass for a score.
Louisa-Muscatine racked up a state-high 642 yards last week in a 46-14 win against Durant-Bennett without completing a pass. Seniors Brandon Tomer (33 carries for 319 yards and seven touchdowns) and Blake Kemp (12 carries for 255 yards and three touchdowns) did most of the work. … Saydel scored more points last week than it did all of last season (43 in 10 games) and still lost 63-47 against Colfax-Mingo. … North Cedar of Stanwood held Northeast of Goose Lake to 27 yards in a 28-0 victory. … Lamoni beat Grandview Park Baptist 60-12 and watched its season scoring average drop. The Demons beat Moravia 82-14 in the season opener.
