High School Football Preview: Tioga, Harpursville in matchup of unbeatens

By

In what could be billed the state’s marquee high school football matchup of the weekend, Tioga and Harpursville will play for the top spot in Division VI with one or the other’s record to absorb its first blemish. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Harpursville.

New York State Sports Writers Association Class D rankings show Tioga No. 2 and Harpursville No. 7, and each team’s 5-0 record reflects one forfeit. No other game across the state this weekend pits opponents ranked among the top seven in their respective enrollment classifications.

The Tigers rolled last week by 50-0 against Oxford– with touchdowns on their first two offensive plays and all points rung up before halftime. Jesse Manuel’s nine carries went for 198 yards and Brad Jump’s three rushes netted another 112. Harpursville got a free pass last week when Candor was short of healthy players.

Tioga concludes the regular season next week at home against Sidney, a team Harpursville slipped past by 28-26 in Week 4.

Friday

Union-Endicott (2-3) at Norwich (3-2): The Tigers allowed opponents six points apiece in their two wins, but have been hit up for 42.7 per game in the losses. Norwich had a three-game win streak halted with a 49-7 loss last week at Maine-Endwell. This game marks the Purple Tornado’s lone home game on the second half of the schedule. …

Binghamton (4-1) at Ithaca (0-5): The Little Red has surrendered 148 points over the past three weekends. These teams played twice last season, with the Patriots outscoring Ithaca by a combined 96-14. …

Windsor (1-4) at Oneonta (1-4): The Black Knights seek their first win since scoring a season-best 23 points on opening day against Horseheads. A season ago, the Yellowjackets were 15-14 winners against Windsor. …

Newark Valley (4-1) at Whitney Point (2-3): The Golden Eagles registered their second shutout victory of the season last week, 34-0 against Thomas A. Edison. In Week 5 of last season, Newark Valley was a 23-13 winner against Whitney Point for the Cardinals’ final win of the year. …

Deposit/Hancock (4-1) at Unatego (4-1): One or the other will emerge with a 4-0 record atop Division V. The Spartans have scored 35.5 points per game in their present four-game win streak. …

Sidney (3-2) at Candor (1-4): The Warriors’ Billy Kozak is coming off a 160-yard, three-touchdown rushing effort in last week’s victory against Seton Catholic Central, and Sidney intercepted three Saints passes.

Saturday

Owego (4-1) vs. Johnson City (2-3): Brandon Morris passed for 162 yards and Nate Bell rushed for 158 in the Indians’ 43-33 win last week at Susquehanna Valley. In last year’s 34-14 win over Owego, Johnson City’s Anthony Johns rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns; he is coming off a 264-yard night last week at Windsor. …

Waverly (4-1) at Chenango Valley (3-2): The Wolverines are on a three-game win streak during which they have averaged 40-3 points per game. The Warriors have won three in a row, allowing a 14-point total over that stretch. …

Susquehanna Valley (2-3) at Maine-Endwell (5-0): The Sabers have dropped back-to-back games since eclipsing their 2012 victory total in Week 3. Maine-Endwell has strung 30 consecutive wins and was No. 15 in MaxPreps National Small School rankings. …

Vestal (3-2) at Elmira (5-0): The Golden Bears’ Nick Wegmann has passed for 555 yards, and teammate Justin Dennis has made 239 yards worth of receptions. The Express, one of four unbeatens in Section 4, has gotten a combined 1,078 rushing yards from Jerry McPeak and Eli Thomas. …

Greene (2-3) at Chenango Forks (4-1): Greene has been outscored 113-18 in its present three-game losing streak. The Blue Devils have yet to allow more than 14 points in a game, and their 46-point total yield is best among Section 4 teams that have played five games. (Tioga has surrendered 28, but one win was by forfeit.) …

Bainbridge-Guilford (1-4) at Delhi (1-4): Delhi allowed Unatego 48 points last week, most the Bulldogs have given up since Liberty’s 54-point splurge in the 2011 season opener. B-G’s Dylan Moffitt rushed for 123 yards last week in a 28-0 win over Unadilla Valley. …

Unadilla Valley (0-5) at Walton (3-2): Last time the Warriors won three in a row was in 2011, when they were unbeaten until a one-point loss in Section 4 final. …
