High School Football Roundup: Balanced attack leads Vestal past Windsor

Nick Wegmann was 12 of 16 passing for 219 yards and a touchdown as Vestal beat host Windsor 28-14 in a Section 4 Division II game Friday night.

Wegmann spread the ball around to Pat Carlin (4 catches, 93 yards), Austin Beck (1-33), Justin Dennis (3-38) and Andrew O’Hara. (2-36, 1 TD) for the Golden Bears (4-3, 2-3).

After a scoreless first quarter, Vestal’s Mike Kosty intercepted Josh Cady at Windsor’s 29-yard line. Wegmann hit O’Hara for a 29-yard score on the next play. After stopping the Black Knights on the ensuing drive, Vestal produced another touchdown when Zach Cook (16 carries, 164 yards) ran it in from 17 yards out to make it 14-0 at halftime.

After trading punts to open the second half, Carlin had a 37-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0. Windsor (2-5, 1-3) responded with a 10 play, 68-yard drive that ended when Cady (27 carries, 138 yards) plunged 1 yard for a TD.

Cook scored on a 68-yard run to make it 28-7 on Vestal’s first play of the ensuing drive.

Maine-Endwell 57, Owego 14: At Owego, the Spartans (7-0, 5-0 Division II) racked up 385 yards on the ground and another 140 through the air against the Indians (4-3, 2-3) on their way to their 32nd straight win.

Darnell Woolfolk scored the first touchdown of the game on a 26-yard run, Trevor Garbelman scored the second when he caught a Kyle Gallagher pass from 14 yards out and Gallagher made added the third score of the first quarter on a 4-yard run.

Gallagher added his second score on the ground from 8 yards out in the second quarter and Woolfolk added his second touchdown on a 2-yard run as M-E took a 36-0 halftime lead.

Woolfolk finished with 151 yards and two scores on 14 carries.

Walton 27, Bainbridge-Guilford 22: At B-G, Austin Kilmer rushed for 83 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Walton (5-2, 3-2) to the Division V victory over B-G (1-6, 1-4).

Kilmer scored on a 40-yard run in the first quarter and then on a 1-yard plunge in the second. With less than a minute left in the first half and Walton leading 21-15, quarterback Blake Hitt found Kilmer for a 24-yard score. The completion was Hitt’s only of the game on four attempts. Derek Mead also ran for 89 yards in the victory.

Mike Carlin caught four passes for 68 yards and a touchdown for B-G. Carlin also ran for a pair of touchdowns and 105 yards on 17 carries. B-G had three possessions trailing by five points in the fourth quarter but could not get into the end zone.

Seton Catholic Central 40, Candor 18: At Candor, the Saints (3-4, 2-3 Division VI) scored 34 straight points after falling behind 12-0 in the first quarter to Candor (1-6, 0-5).

SCC’s Robert Olsen completed 10 of 14 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair of touchdown hook-ups with Nate Whitman, who had five catches for 135 yards. Whitman also scored on an 82-yard kickoff return. Sam Crowley ran for 74 yards, and Dan O’Brien ran for 47 yards and two touchdowns.

Dylan Bean ran for 82 yards on eight carries for Candor. He also had an 88-yard kickoff return for the first touchdown of the game.

Johnson City 63, Oneonta 32: At Oneonta, Anthony Johns ran for 155 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Wildcats (4-3, 3-1 Division II) in their rout of the Yellow Jackets (1-6, 0-4).

Rick Balles added 92 yards and a score as Johnson City pounded out 282 yards on the ground.

S-VE 30, Groton 6: At Spencer-Van Etten, the Panthers (5-2, 3-2 Division VII) clinched a Section 4 Class D quarterfinal berth with the victory over Groton (4-2, 2-2).

Spencer-Van Etten finished tied with Moravia for second place in the division, but the Panthers earned the division’s second playoff berth based in its win over Moravia.

Moravia (4-3, 3-2) still has a shot at a wild-card berth to the Class D tournament.

Whitney Point 16, Greene 0: At Greene, the Golden Eagles (3-4, 1-2 Division III) blanked the Trojans (2-5, 0-4) with two second-half scores.

Mitch Edson connected with Andrew Gardner on a 17-yard touchdown reception for the first score.

Jake Lynch added a 10-yard touchdown run with 10:11 remaining to make it 16-0 after the two-point conversion.

Harpursville 47, Oxford 22: At Oxford, Harpursville (6-1, 4-1) scored the first 47 points of the game in a Division VI matchup against the Blackhawks (1-6, 1-4).

Steven Lee rushed 12 times for 138 yards for the Hornets and Nick Hansen led Oxford with 152 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries.

Moravia 37, O-M 0: At Odessa-Montour, Kyle Henline ran for 215 yards and three touchdowns and Moravia led 28-0 at halftime on the way to a Division VII victory over the Indians (0-7, 0-5).

Two of Henline’s scoring runs came in the first quarter and his 23-yard touchdown capped the first-half scoring. He also ran in the two-point conversion on his second scoring run.

Moravia outgained O-M, 411-83, including 239-66 on the ground.

Trumansburg 42, Edison 22: At Trumansburg, the Blue Raiders (1-5, 1-2) beat Division IV foe Thomas A. Edison (1-6, 0-3).

Joe Ducot ran for 149 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries for Edison, which lost its fifth straight. Tyler Troccia had 89 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.
