The two Class 5A Fort Collins girls golf teams will summon their collective strength to send numbers to the state tournament this season.
It will take hard work and effort, as the teams lost a combined three state qualifiers from a year ago and return just two.
However, coaches Andy Stevens (Fort Collins/Fossil Ridge) and Phil Coatman (Rocky Mountain/Poudre) have high expectations.
Stevens said he’s got some talented players returning who have the ability to make up for the loss of state qualifiers Annie Defrancia and Emily Bermel. Still, Stevens’ squad returns Nicole Thompson, who looks to make a fourth trip to the state tournament.
Coatman returns Elise Hayashi after losing Anna Summers. Hayashi, a senior, is also looking for a fourth trip to the state tournament. In the meantime, Coatman said, she’ll be providing encouragement and leadership to the rest of the team.
Many golfers will get their shot this year to fill some large shoes.
In Class 4A Windsor will be hitting the course with a youth-filled squad. Nine of the 17 team members are underclassmen and will be relied upon to be the backbone of the team.
