A field of 13 varsity football teams will participate in Saturday’s Lafayette Jeff 7-on-7 Shootout and Lineman Challenge at Scheumann Stadium.
The Bronchos will host area teams Benton Central, Carroll, Central Catholic, Clinton Prairie, Delphi, Harrison, McCutcheon, North Montgomery and North White as well as Alexandria, Anderson and Marian.
Pool play begins at 9 a.m., with bracket play starting at approximately 1 p.m. Central Catholic won the varsity tournament for the second time last season.
Linemen will participate in competitions including bench rep, five-man sled push, two-man sled relay, overhead log press, 20-yard dash, tire flip, sled pull, farmer’s walk, five-man obstacle course and tug-of-war.
Girls golf teams officially open the 2013 high school fall sports season when practice begins on Aug. 2. Golf meets can be held Aug. 5, which is the date when all other sports are allowed to begin official practices.
Most sports begin official games and meets on Aug. 19, except football, which begins Aug. 23.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, exertional heatstroke (EHS) is the leading cause of preventable death in high school sports.
