High School Roundup: Conti leads Ocean girls lacrosse team past Holmdel


McKayla Conti scored four of her game-high six goals in the first half to lead the Ocean girls lacrosse team past Holmdel, 17-7, on Saturday in a nondivisional game.

Jenna Gilman scored three of her five goals in the first half for the Spartans (5-1). Freshman Victoria Salvia made her first appearance in the net for the Hornets (0-5) and turned back four shots.

CLEARVIEW 12, RUMSON 11 (OT): Mary Scarrone scored four goals, and Bridget Curran scored three goals, but the Bulldogs (3-3) fell to the Pioneers (4-1) in overtime.

Kelsey Cuje scored two goals, and Emily Knapp and Nicolette Dunphy each scored one goal for the Bulldogs.

RED BANK CATHOLIC 18, LONG BRANCH 4: Maeve Cowley and Amanda Casten each scored four goals to lead the Casey’s (5-0, 4-0) past the Green Wave (0-6, 0-4) in a Class B North game.

Victoria Brown scored three goals and had three assists for the Casey’s.


BARNEGAT 16, TR EAST 10: Junior goalie Matt Grobelny made 26 saves in the net to lead the Bengals (3-2, 1-1) past the Raiders (3-2, 1-2) in a Class A South game.

Bengal’s Nick Anderson scored three of his game-high six goals in the third quarter. Ethan Tonnesen and Justin Snowden each scored four goals for Barnegat.

FREEHOLD TWP. 10, RB CATHOLIC 9 (OT): Junior attackman Stephen O’Brien scored three goals including the game-winning goal with 3:26 left in overtime to lead the Patriots (3-1) past the Casey’s (1-4) in a nondivisional game.

Senior Dan Bloodgood scored three goals, and Sean Koubek scored two goals. Cal Whaley led the Casey’s with four goals, and had one assist.

TR SOUTH 9, LACEY 5: Matt Quinn scored three goals and Johnny Kicak and C.J. Muller added two each, leading the host Indians (1-4, 1-2) past the Lions (4-3, 1-3) in Class A South.

Kicak, Muller and Vitale each handed out two assists. Quinn netted two first-half goals as the Indians took a 4-3 lead.


PINELANDS 3, KINGSWAY 1: The Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and winning pitcher Emma Neuweiler scattered seven hits, walked two and fanned a pair, as Pinelands (5-1) grabbed the nonconference victory over the defending South Jersey Group III champion and Group III runner-up.

As part of the Wildcats’ three-run first, Neuweiler swatted an RBi single and Alison Waldron added a sacrifice fly to push their team ahead for good.

PAUL VI 8, BARNEGAT 1: The Eagles eliminated the Bengals (2-4) from the Overbrook Tournament with a first-round win.

Barnegat’s Ryann Farley went 2-for-3. Barnegat surrendered all eight runs, including two unearned, in the third inning before scoring its only run in the bottom half of the inning.


HOLMDEL 4, DELBARTON SCHOOL 1: The Hornets (6-0) advanced to the semifinals of the Delbarton Tournament with a win over the Green Wave (6-3).

Holmdel’s Mike Chen, Derek Liu and Sam Joynson won at first, second and third singles, respectively. Dennis Barlotta and Ethan Wong added a victory at second doubles.


CBA 2, PISCATAWAY 0: Chris Fastiggi and Dan Andree each had six kills and two blocks, leading the host Colts (6-1) past the Chiefs (3-7) in nonconference action.

John Gatens contributed eight kills. Sal Bivona added three aces and two digs.

SOUTHERN QUAD: The Rams (10-1) went 2-1, besting Williamstown and Old Bridge by 2-0 and 2-1 scores, respectively, and losing to Fair Lawn, 2-0, in non-conference action.

Against Williamstown, Southern’s Luke King and Kyle Ficken had 24 assists and 10 kills, respectively. Against Old Bridge, King handed out 37 assists and Mike Gesicki added 14 kills and two blocks.

In the loss , Gesicki finished with five kills and three blocks and King handed out 20 assists.
