High school roundup: DeBoy's dramatic grand slam lifts Central Catholic baseball

Down to his final strike, Ryan DeBoy hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to lift Class A No. 2 Central Catholic to an 8-6 baseball victory over Lewis Cass.

With one out, Luke Fusiek reached on an error. Jake Churchill singled and Adam Lovell walked to load the bases. With two outs, Cass shortstop Zach McCoy mishandled Andrew Hubertz’s grounder, allowing Fusiek to score and bringing DeBoy to the plate.

Lewis Cass (19-5) scored four times in the top of the seventh off Hubertz before winning pitcher Jackson Anthrop got the final two outs for the Knights (23-5).

Baseball

Merrillville 8-8

West Lafayette 1-7

MERRILLVILLE – Jack Erdman went 3-for-3 for the Red Devils in the opener.

Alex Swiere’s single scored Tyler Scheive with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in Game 2. West Lafayette had tied the game at 7-7 in its half of the seventh thanks to a single by Brian Bangs, Wolfgang Funk’s triple and Drew Rudman’s single.

Everett Gorup, Lorenzo Domondon and Bangs had two hits apiece.

Westfield 4

WESTFIELD – Keaton Hamilton had the Bronchos’ lone hit and scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning.

North White 4-2

Caston 3-1

MONON – Class A No. 8 North White’s lone hit in Game 2, a single by Drake Fleck in the first inning, drove in what proved to be the game-winning run and completed a doubleheader sweep of No. 10 Caston.

Colin Hileman stole his 36th base of the season and came home with the tying run when the throw to third got away. Caleb Hendress then scored on Fleck’s hit.

Clint Hendress (1-0) allowed one hit over five innings, striking out eight. Cole Frybort got the Vikings (19-4, 11-3 Midwest Conference) out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to earn the save.

In the opener, Clint Hendress singled home Dalton Agee with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Caleb Hendress (4-2) struck out eight.

Seeger 4

Fountain Central 3

VEEDERSBURG – Avery Acton hit a two-run homer during a four-run first inning that held up for the Patriots (18-7, 14-0 Wabash River Conference).

Dakota Ware was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, and he earned the save by pitching the final two innings.

Dale Hathaway went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Tyler DePugh homered for Fountain Central.

South Newton 5-16

West Central 0-3

KENTLAND – Ricky Montemayer pitched a five-hitter and went 4-for-4 with four RBIs to complete the Rebels’ sweep.

Kenny Applegate went 3-for-3 for South Newton (11-12).

Joe Wernert pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener with eight strikeouts. Luke Kiifner had three hits, Applegate added a pair and Pat Newton drove in two runs.

Tri-County 4-5

Winamac 1-3

WINAMAC – Riley Benner struck out 14 and went 4-for-4 with a double and two triples in the opener.

Zed Bickett’s two-run double in the top of the ninth inning gave Tri-County (19-6) the sweep. Zack Patton threw four innings of shutout relief.

Shae Lear led the offense with three hits.

N. Montgomery 8

Danville 1

DANVILLE – The Chargers (16-7) wrapped up second place in the Sagamore Conference behind Mitch Rice’s two-hitter.

Baylee Adams and Maverick Bacon had two hits apiece.

Benton Central Invitational

OXFORD – Dakota Lamutt hit two homers for Western in a 10-0 victory over the Bison.

Corbin Weise had BC’s lone hit off Ron Smith.

In the consolation game, Crown Point scored twice in the eighth inning to earn a 9-7 victory over the Bison. Jacob Stucky went 3-for-3 with an RBI for BC.

James Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Bison. Sam Smith and Jacob Turner also had two hits.

Twin Lakes Invitational

MONTICELLO – Brady Wiles had two hits for Carroll in its 4-2 loss to Portage.

Crawfordsville 12

Frankfort 2

FRANKFORT – The Athenians wrapped up their 10th consecutive Sagamore Conference title Friday night.

Jake Zurawski, Chandler Pursell, Shad Conrad and Chase Justus drove in two runs apiece.

Softball

Riverton Parke Invitational

MONTEZUMA – Audrey Headley’s suicide squeeze bunt scored Kerstyn Lowery with the game’s only run in McCutcheon’s 1-0 victory over Terre Haute South in the opener.

Lowery, who went 2-for-3, led off the sixth inning with a triple. Allix Ostermeyer (2-6) pitched a three-hitter for the Mavericks (17-11).

Headley went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and earned her 14th victory of the season in the title game, an 8-3 victory over Riverton Parke. Isabella Kokocinski was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Lafayette Jeff 15

Frontier 2

CHALMERS – Zoee Anderson’s all-around performance, and nine walks by Frontier pitching, fueled the Bronchos’ five-inning romp.

Anderson went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, stole home and recorded two outfield assists. Kaitlynn Moody went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Connor Garrity scored three times. Tori Crouch (1-4) allowed five hits for her first victory of the season.

Fountain Central 6

Seeger 1

VEEDERSBURG – Stefaney Kenworthy pitched a four-hitter and struck out seven for the Mustangs (13-9), who won the Wabash River Conference title at 10-4.

Mary Frazee and Bayli Mitchell had two hits apiece for Fountain Central.

Seeger (8-17) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Kay Irvine’s double, Makenna Cronk’s sacrifice bunt and McKenna Mitchell’s infield grounder.

West Central 12-14

Culver 1-10

CULVER – Hannah Czarnecki drove in three runs to back Autumn Wireman’s two-hitter for the Trojans (7-15) in the opener.

Alex McKay went 2-for-4, and Wireman had two RBIs.

Winning pitcher Sammy Daugherty went 3-for-5 with four RBIs in Game 2.
