Eighth-grader Brittany Deeley’s first varsity goal proved to be the winner as host Dryden defeated Whitney Point, 3-2, on Wednesday in season-opening Interscholastic Athletic Conference girls soccer action.
Ashley Tenkate gave the Purple Lions an early 1-0 lead, then all-state sophomore Taylor Bennett scored late in the half to extend the lead to 2-0. Deeley’s winner came sandwiched in between a pair of unassisted goals from Whitney Point’s Brittany Randall.
Abigail Barr and Amy DeGaetano had assists for the winners, who got six saves from eighth-grader Sarah Westcott.
Dryden hosts Southern Cayuga Friday.
* Moravia 4, Trumansburg 1: Destiny Lemmons had a hat trick to boost the visiting Blue Devils. Abby Prisloe scored the lone goal for T-burg, which led at halftime before Moravia rallied for four second-half goals.
* Newark Valley 2, Newfield 0: The Cardinals got goals from senior Kaitlin Coleman and junior Ashley Kassapian, one in each half, to earn the season-opening victory. Molly Graves made three saves to get the shutout.
Kari Hartman made seven saves for Newfield. NV had a 9-0 edge in corners.
* S-VE 4, Candor 3: Sammy Grippo had a pair of goals and Lisa Nelson dished out two assists for the Panthers. Dallia Rorick and Maggie Hollenbeck also had goals, while keeper Morgan Price made six saves.
Alexis Patak had two goals for the Indians, while Katie Slocum (8 saves) and Morgan Cotton (6 saves) split time in goal.
* O-M 1, Watkins Glen 0: Callie Stillman’s first-half goal stood up as Addie Rhodes made 13 saves to get the shutout. De’Naja Blanchard and Allison Teed combined to make 13 saves in goal for the Senecas.
