High School Roundup: Drummond leads Harpursville past Bainbridge-Guilford in girls basketball

Miranda Drummond led all scorers with 19 points as host Harpursville stayed undefeated with a 36-23 victory over Bainbridge-Guilford in a Midstate Athletic Conference girls basketball game on Monday night.

Tatiana Sosnowski added 14 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, as the Hornets (6-0) outscored the Bobcats, 14-2 in the second quarter, then withstood a 10-1 run by the visitors in the third.

Megan Ferrara had eight points to lead B-G (2-3).

Oneonta 83, Chenango Forks 27: At Chenango Forks, Mariah Ruff led all scorers with 21 points as the Yellowjackets outscored the Blue Devils, 72-16, over the final three quarters to cruise to victory.

Brittney Herrick scored 18 points and Maria DeMartin added 12 for Oneonta.

Alex Yoest scored 17 points to lead Chenango Forks.

Owego 61, Wellsville 44: At Owego, Emily Merrill and Rachel Merrill scored 20 points apiece, leading Owego past Wellsville in a nonleague game.

Caitlin Watson added nine points for the Indians (5-2), which outscored the Lions 12-3 in the third quarter.

Jordan Pearson led all scorers with 23 points for Wellsville (3-3).

Boys basketball

Oneonta 73, CF 44: At Chenango Forks, Jordan Gutierrez’s 29 points included 11 in the first quarter and 12 in the second, leading the Yellowjackets (6-1) to a 25-point halftime advantage. Monday’s output came on the heels of Gutierrez’s 30-point showing Friday against Owego. Robert Story’s 13 points paced the 0-4 Blue Devils.

Newfield 42, Watkins Glen 30: At Watkins Glen, the Newfield boys basketball broke open a close game early on in the second half and cruised past Watkins Glen Monday in the championship game of the Watkins Glen Holiday Tournament.

Chris Byrd led Newfield (6-1) with 16 points and earned the tournament MVP award. Brian Barrett was also in double figures with 11 points.

Tony Keough paced Watkins Glen (5-2) with 11 points. Keith Rekczis contributed seven points and Adam Tuttle six. Only five Senecas scored.

Athens 53, Odessa-Montour 35: At Watkins Glen, the Wildcats led 27-12 at the half and never looked back, winning the consolation game of the Watkins Glen Boys Holiday Tournament.

Brandon Fauver led Athens with 20 points.

Joe Collins paced the Indians (1-6) with 16 points and Bryce Elliott added nine.
