High school roundup: East Lee hoops coach resigns

By

Justin Woodcox has resigned as head basketball coach at East Lee County High School.

Woodcox took over the basketball program in 2006 when the team had only junior varsity and freshman players.

He went 85-72 in six seasons as varsity coach and won the 2012 District 5A-14 title. He said he wanted to step down because he was ready for a new challenge.

“After 14 years of coaching, I want to explore other opportunities,” Woodcox said in a phone interview Thursday.

His coaching career began in 1998, coaching eighth-graders in Indiana.

The team was shocked when they heard the news, according to Woodcox. The team included seven juniors and went 18-9.

“Starting the program from scratch, I wanted to leave it in good shape,” Woodcox said.
