The Horseheads boys bowling team capped its season with an eighth-place finish Saturday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association bowling championships at Strike ‘N Spare Lanes in Syracuse.
Horseheads finished with a pin total of 5,982. South Colonie of Section 2 won with a score of 6,511.
Jared Kucko was the high scorer for Horseheads with a six-game score of 1,317. Other scores for the Blue Raiders: Nate Beebe 1,248; Alex Van Fleet 1,152; Ryan Piersimoni 1,148; and Alex Nowaczyk 1,117.
Kucko was the boys winner of the Section 4 Sportsmanship Award for the tournament.
“We didn’t bowl badly,” Horseheads coach Steve Micknich said. “Of six games, we had one game I think we were a little down. Other than that, we bowled pretty well. We were up against some really good teams.
“With bowling, there’s no (class) A, B, C or D. We literally came in eighth out of the entire state of New York.”
Horseheads advanced to the meet by winning the title at the Section 4 state qualifier. The Raiders’ season also included STAC West and STAC tournament championships.
“It was a great year for the kids,” Micknich said. “It was a year where we had four new kids in the lineup. They exceeded my expectations by a long shot. I told them after the match today that they’re a very scrappy, tough team and it really showed this year.”
Union-Endicott took third in the girls competition with a score of 5,756. Middle Country won with 6,053.
The section all-star teams will compete today at the same site.
