High School Roundup: Horseheads' Corcoran named all-state in boys volleyball

By

Horseheads senior co-captain Christopher Corcoran has been selected to the Division 2 all-state team for boys volleyball.

Twenty-two players were named all-state, with 11 selections in both Division 1 and Division 2. The selections were made by coaches and the state boys volleyball committee.

This was the fourth season on the team for Corcoran.

“Chris is so deserving of this award,” Horseheads coach Crissie Russo said. “He has consistently improved over his four years. His determination, leadership and drive have made him one of the top setters in the state. Horseheads will certainly miss him next season.”

Russo said Corcoran is undecided on his college plans.

EFA graduate guides Baldwinsville to title: Mary Jo Cerqua, a 1982 graduate of Elmira Free Academy, coached Baldwinsville to its second New York State Public High School Athletic Association title in four years Sunday.

The Bees avenged a loss to Our Lady of Mercy in last year’s Class AA final with a 3-1 victory at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Baldwinsville is near Syracuse.

Cerqua was named Elmira Free Academy’s Female Athlete of the Year as a senior after excelling in volleyball, basketball and softball.

Among the other champions were Section 4’s Owego Free Academy in Class B.
