Elmira athletes won nine of 17 events, but Ithaca’s superior depth allowed the Little Red to score a 76-65 victory in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference boys’ track and field meet on Tuesday at Bredbenner Field.
Elmira’s girls scored 12 victories en route to a 96-45 victory over the Little Red.
For the Ithaca boys, Roosevelt Lee won the 100 meters, Bruce Greene won the 200 and anchored Ithaca’s winning 400 relay, Sidney Herman won the 400 hurdles, Dan Dracup took the 800 and Connor Simpson won the 3,200 meters. Jordan Hackworth (long jump) and Dave Franck (pole vault) got IHS’s two field-event wins.
Elmira senior Cory McCarty broke the school record in the 400, winning in 49.6 seconds to break his own record of 50.1 set last year. He also helped Elmira to victories in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.
Winners for the Ithaca girls included Emma Denman (100 hurdles, 200 meters), Casey Fetsko (400 hurdles), Emma Preston (discus) and Sylvie Studier (pole vault).
* Edison 21, Watkins Glen 0: At Thomas A. Edison, a 10-run second inning helped send the Spartans to a five-inning victory that clinched the Interscholastic Athletic Conference South Small School Division.
Edison (13-2, 10-1) collected 15 hits and scored three runs or more in all four of its turns at the plate.
Taylor Engelbert pitched a two-hitter for Edison, which has already clinched the IAC South Small School title.
* Marathon 6, Trumansburg 5: On Tuesday in Marathon, the Olympians (5-5) won a back-and-forth game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Marathon scored once in the bottom of the second, both teams scored three runs in the third and T-burg (9-4) took a 5-4 lead with two in the fifth.
Both T-burg’s Mitchell Swartwood and Marathon’s Jeff Contri went the distance on the mound, allowing eight hits apiece. Cam Lueder tripled for the Blue Raiders, while Tyler Hoellerer had a three-base hit for the winners.
On Monday, Trumansburg edged Moravia, 4-3, with Lueder improving to 6-1 on the year with the complete-game three-hitter with 16 strikeouts. He outdueled Moravia’s Ridge Walker, who fired a five-hitter and struck out 12. Both pitchers walked three.
* Edison 9, Watkins Glen 0: Dylan Bellinger tossed a one-hitter to lead Edison past IAC opponent Watkins Glen in Elmira Heights.
The Spartans scored in each of the first five innings and took advantage of five Watkins Glen errors.
* Dryden 14, Notre Dame 4: Joe DeLucia had four goals and an assist to lead the Purple Lions past the Crusaders. Erik Dardia added a hat trick and Matt Federation and Dan Atwood both chipped in two goals, while Nate Walker earned the win with four saves in goal.
Jonas Caig had a goal and three assists for Notre Dame, while Jake Rice and Kevin Reynolds combined to make 12 saves.
