HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Monsignor Donovan girls soccer captures overtime victory


The Monsignor Donovan girls soccer team went to overtime for the first time this season and came away with a victory as Brielle Underwood redirected a corner kick just 50 seconds into overtime as the Griffins defeated Point Boro, 1-0, in a Class B South game on Thursday afternoon.

Point Boro kicked off to start the overtime and Monsignor Donovan then stole the ball in the midfield. The Griffins (3-1, 3-0) then sent the ball down the line and when a Monsignor Donovan forward tried to cross the ball, it hit off a Point Boro defender resulting in the corner kick.

Taylor Fellenz took the corner kick that resulted in the game-winning goal.

“Taylor kicked the ball from the right side of the field and kick it to the middle of the six-yard line that’s where Brielle was standing,” Monsignor Donovan coach Suzanne Oliver said. “Brielle then slotted the ball to the lower right for the goal.”

Monsignor Donovan goalie Rebecca Dodgson made five saves and Point Boro goalie Cameron Havens made five saves for the Panthers (1-2, 1-2).

TOMS RIVER SOUTH 1, LACEY 0: Samantha Bahr received a through ball from Delaney Savacool just inside the 18-yard line and Bahr lofted a shot just out of the reach of Lacey goalie Sara Wright (15 saves). Toms River South’s Taylor Dean made 13 saves.

MATER DEI PREP 3, POINT BEACH 0: Lindsey Florio scored two goals leading the Seraphs (2-1) over the Garnet Gulls (0-2) in a Class B Central divisional game.

Julia McCarthy also had a goal and two assists for the Seraphs.

Boys Soccer

POINT BORO 1, MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 0: Jake Woodring scored the game-winning goal leading the Panthers (3-1, 3-0) over the Griffins (2-1-1, 2-1) in a big Class B South divisional game.

Woodring scored in the 45th minute off an assist from Gunnar Schnappauf.

BRICK MEMORIAL 4, TOMS RIVER EAST 1: Kevin Duffy scored two goals leading the Mustangs (3-2) over the Raiders (2-1) in a Class A South divisional game. Dan Sprouls also scored in the 28th minute for the Mustangs off an assist from Matt Clayton.

Anthony Batelli scored the only goal of the game for the Raiders in the 42nd minute.

Field Hockey

ST. JOHN VIANNEY 1, MANASQUAN 0: The No. 3 Lancers (1-1-1, 1-1) scored on a penalty corner play as Stephanie Noll inserted the ball to Jackie Gallagher who passed it back to Noll who crossed the ball to the penalty stroke line and Breann Morris tapped it in for the game-winning goal at 12:39. St. John Vianney goalie Megan Guilbert made four saves and Manasquan goalie Johanna Koesseian made two saves.

Girls Volleyball

MARLBORO 2, FREEHOLD 1: The visiting Mustangs (3-0, 2-0) rallied for a Class North win over the Colonials (1-2, 0-2), winning the final game, 25-16.

For Marlboro, Grace Kenningham notched 11 kills, five aces and five digs in the match. Haley Unger added 12 kills, five digs and two blocks. Sydney Tuman contributed nine kills, two aces and three digs.

Sara Weiss led the Colonials with 25 assists, four kills and four digs. Brooke Lundquist added 11 kills and 10 digs.

ST. JOHN VIANNEY 2, HOLMDEL 0: Anne Maganeiello, Haley Scheuer, Megan McGrory and Victoria Wallace led the visiting Lancers (5-0, 2-0) past the Hornets in Class B North.

Maganeiello had three aces, five kills and five digs. Scheuer added six kills and three digs. McGrory contributed five aces, three kills, three digs and two blocks. Wallace finished with two aces, 12 assists and three digs.

Tiffany Cheng led the Hornets with nine assists and seven digs. Lana Kandalaft added seven kills and three digs.

RED BANK CATHOLIC 2, RUMSON 0: The visiting Caseys (4-1, 2-0) received four kills, 10 digs and seven assists from Sara Benjamin in their Class B North win over the Bulldogs (3-2, 3-1).

Mary Yachnik contributed four kills, five digs, 11 assists and three aces. Tara Rempel added seven kills, two blocks, three digs and five aces. Eleni Sourlis led Rumson with three digs, three aces and 13 assists. Kate Edwards added four kills and seven blocks.

RARITAN 2, POINT BEACH 0: Led by Francesca Svoboda’s eight assists and two aces, the visiting Rockets (1-4, 1-2) downed the Garnet Gulls (0-4, 0-2) in Class B North.

Katelyn Eckstein added two digs and seven aces.
