High School Roundup: Owego edges Johnson City boys in basketball opener


Will Gladney scored 21 points and Brandon Hathaway chipped in 19 as the visiting Owego boys basketball team won its season opener 64-59 over Johnson City in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference game.

Hathaway made three 3-pointers and was 2-for-2 from the foul line. The Indians led 28-24 at the half before edging JC 36-35 in the second half.

Colin Arvanitakis scored a team-high 20 points for the Wildcats (1-1) and Dominic Nadz contributed 12 points.

Union-Endicott 81, Ithaca 68: At U-E, four players scored in double figures as the Tigers (1-0) won their season opener with a STAC victory over Ithaca (1-1).

C.J. Krowiak scored a game-high 24 points, Miles Hemphill scored 20, Joey Orlando netted 15 and Osama Barwari added 10. Union-Endicott scored 49 second-half points.

Horseheads 65, Maine-Endwell 61 (2OT): At Horseheads, Kyle Gallagher and Jake Sinicki each scored 20 points, but the Spartans lost in double overtime to Horseheads in a STAC game. The game was tied at 41 at the end of three quarters, 49 at the end of regulation and at 54 at the end of the first overtime.

Jacob Stermer scored a game-high 24 points for Horseheads, including 8 in the overtime periods. The Blue Raiders built a 20-5 lead in the first quarter and led 31-27 at half.

Susquehanna Valley 58, Seton Catholic Central 49: At Seton CC, David Matthews scored 21 points, leading the Sabers (2-0) past the Saints (1-2).

Austin Haskell added 11 points for SV, which went on a 9-0 run after the Saints tied the game at 49 with 2:11 left.

Michael Korchak scored 19 points for Seton CC, including a free throw that tied the game before the SV run. The Saints never had the lead in the second half.

Seton CC cut SV’s lead to 30-29 at halftime after the Sabers held an 11-point advantage early in the second quarter.

Oneonta 66, Chenango Valley 41: At CV, Oneonta’s Jordan Gutierrez scored 27 points as the Yellow Jackets (3-1) hit 12 3-pointers to overpower Chenango Valley in a STAC game. Gavin Ashman had a team-high 10 points for the Warriors (1-1).

Norwich 85, Chenango Forks 45: At Forks, Michael Sutton had 16 points, Mike Oralls 14 and Carlos Ithier 11 as the Purple Tornado defeated the Blue Devils (0-1) in a STAC contest. Andrew Ziegenfus and Dan Gridley each had 13 points for Forks.

Windsor 66, Sidney 48: At Sidney, Nate Wrighter had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Michael Beebe added 11 points and 11 rebounds as Windsor (2-1) pulled away in the second quarter and held off Sidney in a nonleague game.

Nick Meno scored 17 points and Wyatt McKee added 12 for Sidney (0-2), which was outscored by the Black Knights, 24-7 in the second.

Girls basketball

Owego 61, Johnson City 45: At Owego, Rachel Merrill had a game-high 23 points and grabbed 25 rebounds as the Indians (3-2) topped the Wildcats in a STAC game. Jill Silvanic chipped in 16 points for Owego, which outscored Johnson City 16-4 in the first quarter. Chris Carpentieri had 12 points for JC (1-1)


Chenango Forks 108, Johnson City 48: At CF, Chenango Forks’s Mike Diekow won the 50 free, 100 butterfly and was a member of the winning team in the 200 free relay as the Blue Devils topped the Wildcats in a STAC swim meet.

Windsor 100, Greene 82: At Greene, Windsor’s Brendan Smith won the 50 free and 100 free and was a member of winning teams in the 200-yard medley relay and 200 free relay.


Norwich 48, Chenango Valley 21: At Norwich, the Purple Tornado improved to 2-0 in dual meets. Tristan Rifanburg (145), Cole Rifanburg (132), Nick Murphy (152) and Frank Garcia (160) won by pin for Norwich.

Vestal 48, Ithaca 27: At Ithaca, Maxim Kilmer (138 pounds), Robert Mastronardi (152) and David Gardner (182) all recorded pins as the Golden Bears beat the Little Red in a STAC dual-meet.
