High school roundup: Poudre girls claim share of Front Range League title

McKenzie McDaniel scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds Thursday night to lead Poudre High School’s girls basketball team to a 56-46 win over host Greeley West and to a share of the Front Range League title.

Poudre (19-4, 13-3 Front Range League) and Horizon (16-7, 13-3 FRL), which beat Boulder on Thursday night, shared the league title. Horizon won the only head-to-head matchup between the co-champions 55-51 on Feb. 1 in Thornton.

Ashley McDaniel added nine points and Anna Haugen eight for the Impalas, who raced out to a 32-17 halftime lead. That allowed coach Curtis Glesmann to let Myanne Hamm, who was feeling ill, sit out the entire second half. The Impalas also played much of the second half without point guard Sara Fulmer, who left the game early with an injury, yet never let the Spartans get closer than the final 10-point margin.

“McKenzie really picked it up in Myanne’s absence,” Glesmann said.

Pairings for the 48-team Class 5A playoffs will be announced Sunday by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

FOSSIL RIDGE 68, LOVELAND 58 — Savannah Smith scored 27 points and Fossil Ridge came up with a big win over visiting Loveland to finish third in the FRL standings, two games behind co-champions Poudre and Horizon.

Gabby Smith and Lauren Roeling scored 12 points apiece for Fossil Ridge (17-6, 11-5), which could have fallen all the way down to sixth place in the league standings had it lost.

“We needed this one,” Fossil Ridge coach Chad Salz said. “It was a big game, and our girls showed up to win.”

Fossil Ridge led 37-28 at halftime but allowed the Indians to take a one-point lead in the third quarter. The SaberCats finished the quarter strong, though, and led 51-46 at the start of the fourth.

POUDRE 63, GREELEY WEST 48 — Lake Reed scored 33 points and Poudre (10-13, 6-10 FRL) kept its playoff hopes alive with win in its regular-season finale over visiting Greeley West.

Tucker Clay added 13 points and Zach Casey nine for the Impalas, who moved into eighth place in the league standings.

Poudre broke open a game it led by just four points after one quarter by outscoring the Spartans 14-4 in the second quarter and 21-14 in the third.

“Our defense was really good,” Poudre coach Steve Hawes said. “Every shot was contested; they didn’t have one easy shot. We really played well.”

Nick Garza led Greeley West with 16 points.

SIL RIDGE 67, LOVELAND 60 — Corey Peter scored 22 points to lead Fossil Ridge (19-4, 14-2 FRL) to its 10th consecutive win and second place in the league standings.
