High school roundup: Resurrection Christian boys advance to regional hoops final


Wyatt Simon scored 23 points and Resurrection Christian High School’s boys basketball team made 14 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off Kiowa 63-54 in a Class 2A regional playoff game at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.

Thomas Ervin added 17 points for Resurrection Christian (18-4), the No. 2 seed, which will meet top-seeded Akron (18-5) in the regional final at 6 p.m. Saturday for the right to advance to next week’s state tournament at CSU-Pueblo. Akron defeated Liberty Common in the first game of the four-team regional tournament.


LUTHERAN-PARKER 80, HERITAGE CHRISTIAN 27 — Heidi Friedrich, who had surgery in December to repair a torn ACL, hit a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter for her only points of the season for Heritage Christian in a season-ending loss to Lutheran-Parker in a Class 2A regional playoff game at Mullen High School in Denver.

Micaela Bush had seven points and seven rebounds for Heritage Christian (14-9), and Mariah Green added six points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

YUMA 53, LIBERTY COMMON 23 — Molly Gillis and Christiana Spicer scored six points apiece for Liberty Common in a season-ending loss to Yuma in a Class 2A regional tournament at Frederick High School.

Yuma outscored Liberty Common 27-5 in the second half to pull away in a game it led just 12-11 after one quarter and 26-18 at halftime.


FOSSIL RIDGE 2, CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN 2 — Cheyenne Mountain used a penalty kick with 15 seconds remaining in regulation to tie visiting Fossil Ridge in a game that was moved up a day because of forecasts of inclement weather Saturday.

Neither team scored in overtime.

FRONT RANGE CHRISTIAN 2, RESURRECTION CHRISTIAN 1 — Bekah Reeser scored the only goal for Resurrection Christian in a loss to Front Range Christian. Kristen Smith provided the assist on Reeser’s goal.


FOSSIL RIDGE 6, LOVELAND 1 — Fossil Ridge players won two of the three singles matches and swept the four doubles matches in a win over host Loveland.

Fossil Ridge’s Kaitlyn Motley won the No. 2. Singles match 6-4, 6-0, and Andrea Motley won the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Loveland’s only win came from Rebecca Weissmann at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.


QUADRANGULAR MEET — Lindsay Read won the girls long and triple jumps and Eric Lanza swept the same two events in the boys competition and also finished third in the high jump to lead Fossil Ridge to the team titles in a four-team meet at French Field.

The Fossil Ridge girls scored 302 points to runner-up Rocky Mountain’s 187, while the Fossil Ridge boys had 303 points to runner-up Rocky Mountain’s 130 ½. Poudre and Golden rounded out the field.

Fossil Ridge’s Ethan Leonard and Tyler Russell went 1-2 in both boys hurdles races, and Leonard also ran a leg on the winning 1,600 relay team. Russell also won the high jump.

Fossil Ridge’s Rhianna Williams, the defending state champion in the girls 400, won both the 200 and 400.
