High school roundup: Resurrection Christian boys fall to Sanford in Elite Eight

A slow start combined with facing an extremely strong defensive team led to a 47-37 loss for the Resurrection Christian School boys basketball team to Sanford in the 2A Elite Eight on Thursday morning.

No. 2 seed Sanford (22-3) held the Cougars to one point below the 38-point average the stifling Indians defense gave up all year. No. 7 seed RCS (19-6) was held to only four points in the first quarter and 12 points in the first half.

The Cougars finally got the offense going with an 18-point fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as their season ended at the game in Pueblo.

Brock Buxman and Wyatt Simon led RCS with 11 points each and Thomas Ervin added nine.

LAKEWOOD 6, FOSSIL RIDGE 3 — Hosts Lakewood jumped out early, scoring five runs in the first and another in the second to take an early 6-0 lead. Sean Suelter and Julian Garcia then teamed up to shut Lakewood down the rest of the way, but the offense wasn’t able to catch up. The SaberCats (0-1) scored three runs in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough. Blake Calapp, Payton Tapia and Dave Dummer had the RBIs for Fossil.

WINDSOR 9, THOMAS JEFFERSON 3 — It took three tries, but Windsor got its first win of the year with a road victory over Thomas Jefferson on Thursday night. Garrett Hammond was strong on the mound, giving up one run in four innings. Lance Cox had three hits and three RBI.

VALOR CHRISTIAN 8, FORT COLLINS 7 — The Lambkins had a 5-4 lead entering the seventh inning before Valor Christian scored three runs to take a two-run lead. Fort Collins responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, sending the game to extras. In the eighth inning Valor (1-0) scored the winning run to take down Fort Collins (0-1) in its first game.

Poudre High School finished second in a Front Range League match at Flatirons Golf Course in Boulder. Horizon won with a team score of 462. Poudre finished with 452. Fossil came in at 342. Fossil Ridge’s Katie Larson was fifth individually with an 82.

HERITAGE CHRISTIAN 5, COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN 2 — Micaela Bush scored a hat trick, with all three goals coming in the second half, as Heritage Christian won its first game of the year. The Eagles (1-0) also got two first half goals from Amanda Evans to get the road win over Community Christian (0-1).

POUDRE 1, MOUNTAIN RANGE 1 — Anne Lonowski scored Poudre’s only goal to earn a tie in the Impalas (0-2-1) third game of the season.

Fossil Ridge won a meet with Boulder and Monarch winning nine of the events. Walter Dauksher won the 50 yard free with a time of 23.01 as well as the 500 free at 4:58.15. Kevin Lannen won the 200 free and Kincaid Hoffman won the 100 backstroke.

FORT COLLINS 4, MOUNTAIN RANGE 3 — After losing all three singles matches Fort Collins High School came roaring back to win all four doubles matches to steal a win on the road against Mountain Range. The deciding match came down to No. 4 doubles. Collins (2-0, 1-0 Front Range League) got the win after Callie Haward and Coreene Norwood won a tiebreaker in the first set and cruised in the second set for a 7-6, 6-1 win to lead Fort Collins into spring break on a high note.
