High School Roundup: Seton CC girls cruise past Forks in soccer semifinal


Liza Calleo scored two goals and four teammates scored one each to lead the Seton Catholic Central girls soccer team to a 6-0 win over visiting Chenango Forks on Tuesday in a Section 4 Class B semifinal.

The Saints scored three times in each half. Mallory Fox had a goal and an assist, while Samantha Nicolich, Marissa Michitti and Emily Purtell each beat Sierra Torillo, who made 12 saves in defeat. Jessica Walters only one save for Seton Catholic Central (13-2-1), which outshot the Blue Devils 26-1.

Seton Catholic Central advances to the Class B final, where it will face second-seeded Oneonta either Friday or Saturday. The date, time and site will be announced later this week. The Yellow Jackets beat Susquehanna Valley, 3-0, in the other semifinal.

Unatego 0, Elmira Notre Dame 0 (Unatego advances): At Notre Dame, the defending Class C champion Spartans (15-2-1) converted four of their five penalty kicks to advance to the Class C title game against top-seeded Lansing on Friday or Saturday at a time and site to be announced. The Crusaders (13-1-4) made their first two penalty kicks before missing their final two.

Torri Halaquist, Emily Slawson, Cassidy Newman and Mary Rommer converted in the shootout for Unatego. Megan Herrick and Emma Booth kept Notre Dame even through two rounds. Rommer’s kick clinched the shootout win in the fifth round.

Unatego had its best shot at a goal midway through the second 10-minute overtime when Maria Scott hit the side netting.

Lansing 2, Spencer Van-Etten 1: At SV-E, Shea McCartney scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to lead undefeated Lansing to a comeback victory in the Class C semifinal.

After Samantha Grippo scored to make it 1-0 with 20 minutes remaining for Spencer Van-Etten, McCartney tied the game five minutes later on a penalty kick. With nine minutes left in regulation, McCartney scored from 12 yards out, beating keeper Morgan Price for the difference.

Field hockey

Greene 1, Afton 0: At Afton, Katherine Klecha scored with 16 seconds left in regulation on a penalty stroke to put the Trojans into the Section 4 Class C final on Saturday.

Julia Amell of Greene and Afton’s Tori Lent kept the game scoreless throughout the first 29-plus minutes with six and eight saves, respectively, before Klecha put a shot into the upper right corner, beating Lent stick-side.

Greene will host Whitney Point in the final at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Whitney Point 3, Tioga 0: At Whitney Point, Leann Bough scored a minute and a half into the game to give the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish in the Class C semifinal.

Courtney Richards added a second goal for Whitney Point, scoring on a fast break with just under nine and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Elaina Burchall closed the scoring with a goal from the top of the circle in the second half.


Corning 3, Ithaca 0: At Elmira Southside, the Hawks won their third straight Section 4 Class AA title with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-14 victory over the Little Red (6-10).

Hailey Blencowe had nine kills and fellow senior Katie Hartman added six kills for the top-seeded Hawks.

Corning (13-2) will play the Section 9 champion in the first round of New York state regionals at 3 p.m. Nov. 6 at New Paltz High School.

Maine-Endwell 3, Norwich 0: At M-E, the Spartans rolled to a 25-8, 25-18, 25-18 sweep, with Julie Yacovoni providing seven kills, seven digs and 10 assists in their Section 4 Class B semifinal victory. McGinnis Miller also had three aces and six kills for M-E (8-8), which advances to face undefeated Owego in the final at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Watkins Glen.

Oneonta 3, Lansing 0: At Oneonta, Krissy Wells and Brittney Herrick dominated the stat sheet as the Yellow Jackets won the Class C quarterfinal matchup, 25-13, 25-13 and 25-6. Wells tallied six aces, 14 assists and one dig. Herrick notched six kills three blocks and one dig.

Oneonta advances to Thursday’s semifinal pool play at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Horseheads Middle School.

Thomas A. Edison 3, Dryden 0: At Edison, Katelyn Warren had a team-high nine aces, ten kills and 21 digs as the Spartans swept the Lions 25-20, 25-17, 25-22 in a class C quarterfinal match.

Trumansburg 3, Waverly 2: At T-burg, Anna Shelley had 10 kills, Hayley Sherwood 20 assists and Brianna Cochran 23 digs as the Blue Raiders (18-1) rallied to defeat the Wolverines (14-4) 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 25-17 in a Class C quarterfinal match.

Tioga 3, Deposit 0: At Tioga, Lexi Swagler had a team-high five kills and two blocks, and Malley Bowen chipped in with 14 assists as the top-seeded Tigers swept the Lumberjacks 25-11, 25-15, 25-20 in a Class D quarterfinal contest. Tioga advances to pool play at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Horseheads Middle School.

Sidney 3, Southern Cayuga 2: At Sidney, Jilleen Livingston had six aces, Alyssa Cranston had 13 kills and Paige Redmond had 21 assists as Sidney defeated Southern Cayuga 25-21, 25-21, 17-25, 21-25, 25-22 in Class D.

Bainbridge-Guilford 3, Candor 2: At B-G, Alyssa Rivera had six kills, Betsy Holden eight kills and Morgan Bullis added 11 assists as the Bobcats beat the Indians 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 25-22 in Class D.

Harpursville 3, Spencer Van-Etten 0: At Harpursville, the Hornets improved to 19-0 on the season with their straight-set Class D victory. Harpursville won 25-11, 25-21 and 25-10. Megan Matts had four aces and 22 assists in the win. Sarah Miller added eight kills.
