High school roundup: Seventh-inning comeback lifts West Lafayette baseball

Connor Micklo and pinch hitter Parker Ronchetto hit back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to rally West Lafayette to a 3-2 baseball victory over Crawfordsville at Bob Friend Field.

Spencer Ronchetto led off the seventh with a walk and moved to third when Everett Gorup was safe on a sacrifice bunt.

Lorenzo Domondon pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the victory. Wolfgang Funk drove in West Lafayette’s first run with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly. Jack Erdman went 2-for-3 for the Red Devils.

A two-out error allowed Jordan Jackson to score in the first inning for Crawfordsville. Cameron Monroe’s RBI single in the fifth inning made it 2-0.

Baseball

Faith Christian 18-9

Greenwood Chr. 6-3

GREENWOOD – Vernon Ford and Lucas Deitrick each went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Eagles in Game 1.

Hunter Taylor also was 3-for-5 with three runs scored for Faith Christian in the opener. Taylor added three more hits in Game 2 to back winning pitcher Brennan Argo.

Frontier 15-21

West Central 5-0

FRANCESVILLE – Hunter Gladish hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, and winning pitcher Brandon Gallinger went 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener for Class A No. 1 Frontier.

Austin Byrd was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and Kyle Mikesell drove in three runs while going 2-for-3 for the Falcons (16-0, 8-0 Midwest Conference).

Drew McKay doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in a run for West Central (1-10). Austin Parish and Luke Owens also had two hits apiece for the Trojans.

Frontier’s Cole Fesler pitched a one-hitter in Game 2, which saw the Falcons pile up 18 hits. Michael Hirt was 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Jimmy Wood, Austin Woolley and Gallinger also contributed two hits apiece.

Carroll 9

Rossville 2

FLORA – Seth Eldridge allowed one hit and struck out six over four innings for the Cougars (7-3).

N. Montgomery 3

Danville 0

LINDEN – Jalen West pitched a two-hitter and fanned seven for the Chargers (8-3).

Maverick Bacon went 2-for-3 and Jordan Lewis had an RBI single for North Montgomery.

Tri-County 8-3

Caston 2-2

WOLCOTT – Lucas Vosburgh struck out eight and drove in two runs for the Cavaliers in the opener.

Kyle Miller and Paul Budde also had two RBIs apiece.

Vosburgh drove in the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in Game 2. Riley Benner and Budde each went 2-for-3 for the Cavaliers. Blake Justice pitched 61/3 innings of two-hit relief to get the victory.

Attica 10-6

North Vermillion 5-12

CAYUGA – JR Dunwell doubled, homered and drove in five runs as the Red Ramblers split a Wabash River Conference doubleheader.

Lance Whorrall drove in four runs on a 3-for-7 day for Attica (8-6, 4-2 WRC), and Justin Harmeson went 4-for-8 with an RBI. Jordan Capps went the distance in Game 1 to improve to 5-1.

South Newton 4-5

Pioneer 0-6

ROYAL CENTER – Kenny Applegate’s four-hitter in the opener led the Rebels to their first Midwest Conference victory since 2011.

Applegate also went 2-for-3, as did Skylar Sanders.

Applegate took the loss in Game 2 when Pioneer scored in the bottom of the seventh. Applegate was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Cody Bryan was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Softball

Lafayette Jeff 2

Brownsburg 0

BROWNSBURG – Maegan Rusk hit a run-scoring double in the first inning and an RBI single in the third for the Bronchos (9-7).

Kaitlynn Moody (9-7) struck out 12.

Pioneer 8-4

West Lafayette 0-2

Betsy Bingaman pitched a pair of three-hitters for Pioneer.

Sophie Shinn homered in Game 2 for West Lafayette. Grace Palmieri and Megan Moody had hits in each game for the Red Devils.

Covington 2

Fountain Central 1

COVINGTON – Outfielders Regan Foster and Lainey Holt took home runs away from Fountain Central, and Mallory Ponder hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ponder finished 2-for-3 to back Ali Holmes’ four-hitter for the Trojans (5-7). Stephanie Kenworthy homered for Fountain Central in the seventh.

Delphi 4-5

Tipton 1-7

DELPHI – Summer Sutton and Tayva Ware hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning for the Oracles (7-7) in Game 1.

Sutton struck out seven and pitched a two-hitter in the opener. Fallon Rummel went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Ware was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in Game 2, but Tipton (6-3) rallied for six runs in the fifth inning. Olivia Bieghler and Emma Carpenter each were 2-for-4 with an RBI for Delphi.

Tri-County Invitational

WOLCOTT – Carly Kingery struck out 12 of the first 14 batters she faced and finished with 15 to lead Carroll past Tri-County 12-0 for the championship.

Paige Spesard went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, and Courtney Atkisson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cougars (6-4) in the title game.

Atkisson was nearly as dominant in the opener, an 11-3 victory over Caston. She struck out 10 over five innigns and went 4-for-4 with three runs. Libby Eller was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Kaitlin Ragan doubled twice.

Tri-County reached the final with a 10-5 victory over Rensselaer. Jessie LeBeau went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Kristie LeBeau and Jada Rance each were 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Clinton County

Tournament

FRANKFORT – Ashlyn Orem pitched a one-hitter and struck out five to lead Frankfort to a 9-2 victory over Rossville in the consolation game.

Kylee Cooper, Becca Mullins and Orem had two hits apiece for the Hot Dogs.
