High School Roundup: Unbeaten Sus Valley boys shut out Johnson City

Susquehanna Valley’s boys emerged from a scoreless first half to claim a 2-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference soccer victory Wednesday over visiting Johnson City.

In the 56th minute of play, Ryan Taylor sent a free kick from about 35 yards to an unmarked Ryan Caroway, who one-touched a shot that grazed the goalkeeper’s fingertips and sneaked inside the far post.

Austin Long completed scoring about 10 minutes later, volleying one home from about 18 yards after JC cleared an initial cornerkick. Matt Merrell was credited with five saves for the 7-0-1 Sabers.

Chenango Forks 3, Oneonta 1: At Chenango Forks, Brandon Dutcher scored late in the second half to put the game away for the Blue Devils in an East Division game. Arthur Ingraham made six saves for Forks (3-5). Theo Malone scored Oneonta’s lone goal on a first-half penalty kick.

Union-Endicott 4, Binghamton 0: At Binghamton, Botan Zebari and Sam Espi each tallied a goal and an assist as the Tigers won the Metro Division game. Brandon Hyde made 13 saves for Binghamton.

Seton Catholic Central 4, Windsor 3 (OT): At Windsor, Alex Kashani scored the winning goal early in overtime. Griffin Covert had a free kick, and Kashani headed it past the Saints goalie.

Covert scored twice in the second half to give the Saints a 3-2 lead. Windsor’s Jason Schmidt tied it with two minutes to go in regulation. Noah Jones had the assist off a free kick.

Vestal 5, Maine-Endwell 1: At Vestal, Kyle Garner scored in each half to lead VestalE. James McIntosh, Kyle Powers and Nick Rinde added goals for the Golden Bears. Mark Lee had M-E’s lone goal.

Corning 1, Ithaca 0: At Corning, Zach Quist scored the game’s lone goal from the top of the penalty area 23 minutes into the game to give the Hawks (7-10 the win.

Girls soccer

Waverly 1, Newark Valley 0: At Waverly, Elle Nittinger scored 11 minutes into the second half as the Wolverines (5-0-1) eked out a Interscholastic Athletic Conference victory. Danielle Burkhart crossed the ball to the far post and Burkhart headed the ball past goalie Molly Graves.

Tennis

Seton Catholic Central 6, Johnson City 1: At Johnson City, the Saints won six matches in straight sets as they clinched the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Central Division title with a win over the second-place Wildcats. Alina Galyon won 6-0, 6-0 over Marlee Burr at third singles. Tiffany Hamdan was the lone Wildcats winner as she defeated Abby Galyon 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the top singles slot.

Vestal 7, Ithaca 0: At Ithaca, the Golden Bears dropped only one set as they swept the Little Red. Alexandra Federowicz defeated Ithaca’s Hannah Zimar 6-0, 6-0 at first singles.

Norwich 7, Sidney 0: At Sidney, the Purple Tornado didn’t drop a set and improved to 10-0 on the season with a shutout victory. Breanna Cashmen defeated Nicole Rajner 6-0, 6-0 at second singles.

Golf

Windsor 181, Chenango Forks 183: At Genegantslet, Nate Wrighter shot a 1-under 34 to lead Windsor to a two-shot victory over Chenango Forks. Windsor’s 181 ties a school record for a round.

All five golfers for each team shot sub-40 rounds. Windsor improves to 9-1 on the season. The Blue Devils drop to 6-4, but their four losses have come by a total of 11 shots.
