Megan Tinklepaugh’s penalty kick proved the difference as Vestal avenged one of its two losses by defeating Horseheads 1-0 Thursday evening at home in Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls soccer action.
Tinklepaugh successfully converted her penalty kick with 2:28 remaining in the first half. Golden Bears keeper Aubrey Petcosky made three saves in the victory.
Vestal at 7-2 is in first place in the Metro Division.
Susquehanna Valley 2, Norwich 0: At Susquehanna Valley, Rosemary Zelenyak scored two first-half goals as the Sabers won a STAC game against Norwich. Susquehanna Valley improved to 9-1 and is leading the Central division.
Seton Catholic Central 5, Chenango Valley 1: At Seton Catholic Central, Kaelyn Michitti scored two goals and had an assist as the Saints (5-1-1) cruised to a four-goal victory. Kesondra Stafford scored for Chenango Valley.
Elmira Notre Dame 4, Newfield 0: At Elmira Notre Dame, Emily Carson, Emma Booth and Jillian Perrault all scored as the Crusaders improved to 8-0-1 and earned its eighth shutout of the season.
Chenango Forks 4, Johnson City 0: At Chenango Forks, Emily Andrus scored twice to lead the Blue Devils.
Ithaca 5, Binghamton 0: At Binghamton, Charlotte Williams and Elora Becraft each scored twice for the Little Red.
Field hockey
Vestal 2, Whitney Point 1: At Vestal, Diana Ruggiero scored the game-winning goal with 4:24 left in a clash of two of Section 4’s top teams. Ruggiero scored on a rebound off a Baylee Burghardt shot, beating Whitney Point goalie Danell Jones. Emma Stockwin had seven saves in net for the Golden Bears (7-1), who won their seventh game in a row. The Golden Eagles fell to 5-2.
Maine Endwell 4, Seton Catholic Central 0: At Maine-Endwell, Dani Cronk scored twice and the Spartans improved to 7-2 overall.
Windsor 1, Greene 0: At Windsor, Morgan Doing scored with 21 seconds remaining in the game to give Windsor the win. Emma Benson drove a ball in from the top of the circle, and Doing scored the game-winner from about seven yards out.
Golf
Windsor 186, Chenango Forks 204: At Golden Oak Golf Club, Matt Ploutz had a career-best 1-under 34 on the front nine as the Black Knights defeated the Blue Devils in a STAC East Division battle. Ploutz hit all nine greens in regulation as Windsor improved to 10-1.
Vestal 188, Corning 211: At Corning Country Club on the par-34 front nine, Vestal junior Jon Fosbury shot a 2-under 32, the lowest score at Corning C.C. by a high-school player in 16 years. Vestal improved to 9-1 and leads the STAC Metro Division.
Owego 200, Johnson City 219: At Pheasant Hill, Matt Wieckhorst (37), Matt Marsili (38), and Zane Paradies (38) all fired sub-40 rounds on the front-9 as the Indians (4-5) won their third match in a row.
Volleyball
Owego 3, Windsor 1: At Owego, Michayla Jenkins tallied 11 kills, and Carrie Farr added 23 assists as Owego improved to 8-0 with a 25-9, 20-25, 25-11, 25-10 victory.
